Re: NYC schools will have to make up the days lost!!
we lost the days even using our built in snow days. Apparently the senate can overturn the 182 day rule but we just have to wait and see!

I am not a teacher but what do you expect them to do...isn't the rule supposed to be a certain # of days in session per year? Would you rather they add on at the end of the year? Just curious. They have to be made up somehow...no?

I was curious about this too. Doesn't the union contracts state no school before or after certain dates? Regardless, the law is 180 days of instruction. This is an unfortunate event, yes, did the kids miss school, yes, should the days be made up....IMO, yes.

i am a teacher and honestly it doesn't bother me, yes i love the week off but we need to have a certain number of days of instructional time, and i certainly don't want them to tack them on in June,

I don't find it unfair to have to make up the days... It's stinks to "lose" days that were expected off but it is what it is. What I wish, though is that some of the days could have been taken from the spring break too to break up the time being given back

I'd prefer to make up all of the days at once in February instead of altering two breaks.

NYC schools will have to make up the days lost!!
I don't know how I feel about this. Not even sure if I should have an opinion as I'm not a teacher.
I don't bash teachers - have a ton in my family - know its a tough job.
I agree it sucks to lose out on a vacation off, but so many in private sector had to use vacation days/earned time off/ect when they couldn't come in due to sandy - whether it was lack of child care, gas shortage, homes destroyed, offices closed because of no power.
I have friends that lost out on days in their banks because their office was not open. Some have to work on weekends now, longer hours during weekdays, some were mandated at work and couldn't leave.
Not bashing or not saying it sucks, just shedding light that it sucks for more than teachers and you're not alone. I say that kindly, too.

I'd heard we had 182..that's 2 days more than the 180 everyone else works
I'm a LI district and we work 183 as per our contract. Looks like we'll be losing our February break too though
Do you know when LI districts will be announcing this?

This is exactly what I expected to happen. It isn't fun to lose the time off, but I understand why it's being done.

It does suck all around. I lost 4 vacation days out my bank for the days I couldn't commute into the city. What gets me even heated is that some people in the department were able to work from home, so they didn't lose the days. I had no choice, the Governor declared a state of emergency so there was no way for me to get into the office. I would have worked from home given the opportunity. I am now vacation which was planned in September and am losing three days of pay because of Sandy.

NYC schools will have to make up the days lost!!
It is what it is. The children are entitled to 180 days of instruction, and the curriculum shouldn't have to be rushed since they missed out on almost 10 days of school. That isn't fair to anyone, especially older students that are prepping for Regents/AP exams.

The regents are in January. The makeup days would be after them, so there would be no additional instruction time to prep for them.
We already have plans for February break, so my children will be missing a few days.

And for Regents purposes they days have to be made up earlier.

Re: NYC schools will have to make up the days lost!!
I think doing them all at once is hard for the kids and teachers who already have made plans, but I hope mother nature gives the school districts a major snowstorm during the Feb break. I think it is dangerous to have the make up days in the middle of winter because the districts still might need snow days. :)

No idea, the schedule online says for NYS it's January 2013. I've also heard several other people mention January as well.

This makes no sense. If there is a snowstorm , people can not travel. If extra days are needed, it could be tacked on to the end of the year. No one wants to be in school into July!

There are Regents exams in both January and June. Most students take their regents in June. In my school the only students who take January Regents exams are those students who failed it the first time and are trying to pass for a second or third time.
each school is different though, some of them may schedule some students to take a first time regents in jan

There are regents in January but typically the kids taking them are either making them up from the June prior (if they failed) or they are taking them ahead if they want to graduate early. All other kids take them in June using the curriculum they learned over the school year.
Levittown SD is going to make the days up the 20-22 of February as of today. Apparently they cant take away the April break because it runs concurrent with Passover.

A lot of NYC schools give the regents in January and use June as a 2nd chance if you didn't pass it the first time. My students are taking the English regents this January for the first time as 11th graders. My old NYC school did this as well.

Yes the law is 180 days, however the DOE has 186 scheduled days this year. So they are making up extra days.
