Teacher gift... Wine?
Is a bottle of wine okay to give to a teacher as part of their Christmas gift?
What do you think? TIA

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I don't like giving wine to people I don't know personally, but I come from a long line of substance abusers and keep a dry home. I know most people don't think twice about it.
Plus I shudder to think of the mess when my 1st grader drops it in the hall on his way to the class and a bunch of 6 year olds tromp through it.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I've heard of people doing it and the teachers liked it. I however wouldn't personally do it.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I'm a teacher and never received wine as a gift. Honestly, I think it's a kittle inappropriate.

Teacher gift... Wine?
Inappropriate IMO. I never assume someone drinks. I don't, and have received many bottles of wine over the years that get re-gifted, or dusty.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
One of my FB friends posted this question and it got me thinking. I mean I LOVE wine, Lol, but I don't think I would give it to my child's teacher. She was on the fence about it and a lot of people said it was a great idea.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
as a teacher I would think its inappropriate. Obviously I would accept it graciously though. I had a TA that once bought me a bottle of wine. I felt uncomfortable keeping it on my desk for the day!

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
As a former teacher, I could have used it. But I'd be very hesitant to give alcohol to anyone I didn't know very well, you never know who's in recovery or can't drink for health reasons.
I do appreciate that buying teacher gifts is tough! My DD is in K so I'm on the other side now and I don't know what to get them!

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I have never given wine. I play it safe and stick to gift cards. I always feel weird buying "stuff" for teachers in general, since I imagine they get tons of it. I notice on these teacher gift threads, there are always a few people who mention getting some little Vera Bradley item-- I picture teachers having this huge closet (or Ebay store ) full of Vera Bradley wristlets, lunch bags, etc.
I will say though, that one year I was a class mom, and the teacher gave ME wine as a Christmas gift

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
As a teacher, I would say no, it's not appropriate. Plus, then you are sending your kids on the bus with alcohol, and I'm pretty sure people would frown on that.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I would feel weird having my kid give anyone alcohol as a gift. I'll leave that until they're 16 & sneaking it to their friends on their birthdays.
I always go with a gift card to Starbucks, Macy's, Target, Michael's, etc.

I am a teacher and I like wine, but I would think it inappropriate to send it to school. GC's are always my favorite.

Completely inappropriate. I would never send alcohol with my child to school no matter who it is for.

Well I think her daughter is 3 or 4, so I'm sure she was bringing it in.
Thanks everyone.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I'm a teacher and usually open gifts in front of the kids. I would be embarrassed to open wine in front of kids. That being said, I'm a wino and would like it as a gift...just wouldn't want a kid to hand it to me, kwim?

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I have no problem with getting wine as a gift, but I'm particular so I would only drink it if it was white zin
if you want to give wine, hand it to the teacher yourself. don't give it to the kid to give in. i don't think it's inappropriate at all

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
My mom always gave the teachers a bottle of sparkling wine for Christmas. She brought it up to school herself, though. Her reasoning was that since she didn't know most of them very well that they could enjoy it themselves, serve it to guests over the holidays or re-gift it. But I also was in elementary school in the 70s, so it was a much different time.
As a teacher, I would love to get wine, but as a parent I most likely would never give it as a gift to a teacher.

Re: Teacher gift... Wine?
I think wine is always a nice gift.
When I was teaching I got the funniest gift at Xmas...........a student gave me a whiskey gift set. It was a big bottle of whiskey with a flask. I was dying. I thought it was an odd gift however, DH loved it!

Sounds like a regift to me
I think a student giving alcohol to a teacher is extremely inappropriate, and I am as easy-going as they come! I would never give wine to a teacher myself either, only because how would I know if they drink or not?

When I was teaching in the city I saw so many odd, strange, inappropriate gifts from students that I think I am desensitized...........wine sounds perfectly normal to me. (given that the parent hands it to the teacher )
But speaking as a former teacher, my favorite was gift cards. You can't go wrong with gift cards!!!
