4.5 month old with a cold
Hi My 4.5 mo old son has the worst cold - I feel so bad for him. He's congested, runny nose, coughing...is breathing so heavy when he sleeps & is so restless. Had his 20 week checkup yesterday so was seen by the dr & she said there's nothing you can do at his age - try a humidifier. Do you all think they really help? I had one for DD & hate them - they get so dirty & let out such a must I feel like their room gets damp. I'll try anything so if you have one you love pls recommend. A few friends told me they've given Benadryl at this age for a bad cold. My son is just under 20 lbs so he's big for his age. My ped said she doesn't recommend - he's too young but she said she knows many people give it & even told me the dosage he'd need. I've never even given it to my 2 yr old so I am clueless but if it would make him more comfortable I'd try. Thoughts? My ped thinks it just sedates them & does nothing to actually help the cold.
TIA just hoping to help him feel a little better.

Re: 4.5 month old with a cold
The humidifier helps to clear up the nasal passages. We use the saline nose spray and nose sucker for our kids.
Benadryl helps to dry out the child, but doesn't really do anything for the actual cold.
We've given benadryl starting at 4 months, but that was under the ped's supervision and because my DD had reoccurring croup and since the benadryl made her less mucusy it helps her with the croup and her breathing issues.

Re: 4.5 month old with a cold
DS had his first cold around 4 months...I never gave him meds..just lots of saline nasal spray and the humidifier..I found the cold air humidifier helped keep every thing moist so he was able to breathe..I also had him sleep upright in his rnp or bouncy seat....it wasn't the most comfortable because he was big, but I think when he was laying down it was worse.
Good luck!

Ditto the previous poster. My dd is 3.5 mo ths old and has been sick twicr already. No meds. Lots of saline spray, sleeping upright, run the humidifier at night. Put Vicks on feet and cover with socks. I also diffuse essential oils, but I'm sure you could get one of those Vicks plug ins. Good luck!

This.
Also sitting in steam for 10-15 mins before bed helped clear her up a bit so she could sleep more comfy.
