FMLA & Bedrest for NYC teachers -FYI

Hi Ladies, I'm just trying to share some information so you don't get screwed by the DOE like I did. Bedrest does count towards your FMLA leave even though the baby is not born yet. As soon as you go out on bedrest the days start ticking off your FMLA leave.

Do you know how it works with insurance if you go on bedrest and therefore go past the 12 weeks granted by FMLA

Well, if you deliver before the 12 weeks is up, you will have insurance up until your baby is 6 weeks old (vaginal) or 8 weeks old (c-section). I'm not saying it is easy to get it straightened out, but you should be covered until you are expected back at work. Once that date hits, you would lose coverage if you don't return. Also, if you do lose coverage, the UFT will cover you for some time but you would need to call them about that. You also may be entitled to disability through the UFT if you use up your days/borrowed days/and grace period.
