Ok , so I have to ask the question ... Do you ACTUALLY think that any stricter gun control will prevent these animals from obtaining guns and Killing..????? IT WILL NOT.
DRUGS are ILLEGAL yet they are a major issue in society and kill thousands everyday.
GUNS are NOT the problem here... PEOPLE are the problem and no matter how many restraints are put on GUNS a crazy low life crimanl will find a way to get their hands on one if they truley want to kill.
AND one other question... These laws that everyone thinks should be put into effect.... Would these laws have stopped Adam Lanza from getting his hands on those guns ...... NOPE!!!!!!! and why ????? Because the guns were registered to HIS MOTHER!!!! And were fully legal. So this goes back to my point of NO MATTER WHAT , a crazy person will find a way wether it be as easy as it was for Adam Lanza or be it not so easy, to kill if that is their intention!!!!!!
I fully believe that if Adam Lanza's MOTHER didn't have guns in her home; didn't have unsecured assault rifles in her home he would not have succeeded.
I'm sure he would have tried.
And if he was truly the mentally ill, ASD diagnosed person that they claimed him to be, I think it's very likely he would have gotten himself killed in the process of trying to illegally buy weapons. Or someone may have been alerted to what he was planning.
Or he would have given up.
Everyone says "they will find a way." So do nothing??? COME ON HERE! Guess what, many people don't do drugs because they're illegal - and only because they're illegal. Many people get BUSTED trying to do illegal things.
I know in my soul that if his mother didn't have a fricken assault rifle laying around her home, he wouldn't have ruined as many lives as he did. Maybe he still would have shot up the school, but not to the same degree. That needs to count for SOMETHING.

FYI NRA has a batch of proposed "model" legislation on deck.
One of them will effectively repeal the ban on machine guns that has been in place since '34. Machine guns. Full auto. Fully legal.
But we don't have a gun problem.
The drug dealer crackhead street walking 15 year olds giving out blowjobs on the street need machine guns. They need to be able to take out the diabetics eating bananas they haven't paid for while taking up 2 seats on the subway.
Yeah, your real funny.

I merely responded to your post, you're the one blowing it out of proportion. You have not made a single useful point. You keep saying they're gonna get them anyway, and when I say how ridiculous the line of reasoning is, you act like I've got the problem?
Speak to me like an adult and tell me what you think is an effective measure? You clearly stated that gun control will not stop these killings, so what do you think will?

Well then there's our common ground. Good thing I'm not looking to get sane murder legislation passed. Whew.
The zero-risk bias is a particularly weak debate tactic. Just fyi.
Sane murder legislation ???
What sense does that make???? Obviously if you are going to commit murder, YOU ARE NOT SANE!!!
It is a perfectly viable "debate tactic" as you call it . And if you were to look past your own "opinion" , and see others views on this, you may understand.
This topic has one of 2 view points, and you are either strictly for more gun control or you are not . You are very condecending in the way you are trying to prove your point.
It does not make me a "bad person " or a "problem in this country" because I don't believe that stricter gun control will stop a murderer from murderering. IN MY OPINION, I believe that anyone that believes that does not know all the facts and is just going off of their emotions. I am a mother, and STB wife of a police officer. I hear stories everyday that would make a normal everyday mother and wife cringe. REALITY is REALITY. And REALITY is that no matter how much we combat guns, drugs or any other legal or illegal activity, it can and does happen ... Bottom line.

The argument is not
I was of the mentality that they will find a way .... Until I saw the above photo of the bullet that was used to slaughter those children and adults.
If my child was hit with that bullet from an assault rifle 11 times, you bet your ass I would be changing my stance on banning assault rifles. No civilian needs one for the sake of just having it.

if you want people to listen to you you should try being less condescending.
Agreed.
Regardless of my opinion on the topic, the nasty tone and self-righteousness is a major turn-off. Yuck.
I love reading political posts, but the second someone is rude to another person I tune out.
The problem with this issue (and essentially every political issue) is that both sides over simplify the problem AND the solution. There is not an easy, 1-size-fits-all solution here.

The apathy of some posters in respect to this is frightening. So if we do nothing to try to stop this, what will they be saying then?

For the record, I agree with a ban on assault weapons. However, the tone on this thread and all other on LIF is disgusting. The condescension and lack of respect is appalling. It is no wonder our country is heading where it is going and our politicians are so ineffective. It is okay to have differing opinions it is NOT okay to believe that one's opinion is the only correct one. THAT line of thinking is why there are no compromises and instead we are at a stalemate. It is important to listen to and understand what the opposing sides' views are in order to arrive at a workable solution. Calling people names and resorting to mean-spirited sarcastic comments just makes one look like you cannot come up with a better argument.

You will get no apology from me for tone. Those kids deserve better than false information, disingenuous discourse.
Further, I'm not trying to change your opinion. Not even a little bit. I simply could not give a flying fig what invective you send my way. And I mean that sincerely. Water off a duck's back.
My posts are for those who are open to information, and take a moment today, tomorrow next week, to think critically about all the information that's flying by them. Not those who are entrenched either way.
My husband is a gun advocate. He is ALSO pro gun reform. It's a position I share and one that makes sense to me. If it doesn't to you, well by gollly better send our $40 to the NRA or some other advocacy group and get your voice heard. Cause this shit is changing.

I am by no means saying don't have HOPE. I pray everyday that my children are safe and that my STB DH who goes out almost every night fighting all of this and trying to keep all of YOU safe. I never said for a second that we shouldn't hope. But I am being realistic. Maybe it's because I know way too much about what goes on out there, more than maybe a normal person would .. Maybe I'm jaded but I always hope.

and if he walked in with a "musket" 20 BABIES wouldn't have died. shot... MULTIPLE TIMES... within seconds.
As someone who lives in Newtown and has a first hand account of all of this, here is what I'm going to say.
If Nancy Lanza didn't have those weapons he would not have succeeded as he visited 5 gun shops over the course of the week prior to purchase guns and was denied.
As someone who WENT to funeral and saw those babies bodies because most were open casket I will say this. These weapons and bullets are made to DESTROY. The bullet used, when it enters the body opens like a flower and is used to severely damage tissue and blast it.
A shot gun and and pistol would not have done so much damage, those children might have had a chance to live. The two babies brought to the hospital might have survived.
These man BLASTED OFF ands of children with one bullet, the entire side and jaw of anothers face, half of the torso of another acts that could have only been done with these assault rifles. They had NO chance or survival.
I'm sorry if this is harsh but this is the reality. I saw one little boy who had a cloth covering the side of his head that was blasted off the same boy whos hand and lower arms was GONE by another bullet...... These babies were RIPPED TO SHREDS.
Half of Victoria Sotos' class watched as the teacher was slain and witness blood gushing out of her mouth as she was shot in the neck and chest..... 6 year old babies lived to see that.
These weren't simple gun wounds, this was a slaughter. SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE!!!!

Your passion on the topic is evident and totally understandable. And you're right - a change has to happen. But I think there are a variety of approaches that need to be taken. It isn't that simple (unfortunately).

I believe that we should look into other reasons as to why this happened. Including his mental state. Maybe if he would have been able to get help or had better access to help he wouldn't have been in the public to commit such a crime... There were alot of things that happened in this case , and alot of other things that could be to blame aside from the guns. I never said once that it isn't worth a shot, I only said that no matter what these people will, no matter what, wether legal or illegal get their hands on these weapons. Thats all. And honestly that is reality.
