Insurance covering cryopreservation of sperm?
My husband just dropped off a sample to freeze. We are in the middle of an IVF cycle, he has been suffering from kidney stones and the doctor wanted a sample on hand in case the kidney stones hit again and to check his levels. During our last cycle the medicine that he was on for the kidney stones affected his count. Anyway, I have empire insurance, the government plan, and the coverage is luckily really good. I foolishly just assumed that it was covered but I guess it wasn't b/c he just told me it cost $300 to do the freeze. Does anyone know if it is covered? I was hoping it was an error, but I am sure it's not. The thing is my husband has been feeling fine, no sign of the stones in about two weeks and we probably wouldn't have opted to freeze if we knew we were going to have to pay OOP.

We have Empire and have 3 vials frozen since last June. Under our plan, we have 50k max each, and the cryo is covered under his 50k.

DH had to undergo TESE. We used one frozen vial for our IVF, and have 2 vials still frozen. Neither the procedure nor cryopreservation were covered. I'm guessing this varies policy by policy though.

I thought the cryo would be covered under his 50K but she said it was $300. I am going to call Empire next week they are closed right now. Thanks for your replies!

I unfortunately have always had to pay oop, but for both my ivf cycles we always froze DH sample prior to retireval in the event something happened that morning and he wasnt able to produce a sample. I would assume ths s common practice whether cycle is oop or through insurance. Good luck!!!

if place is considered a Center of Excellence then it would be covered. I happen to work for a fertility practice.. If you ave any questions you can contact me.
I go to RSofNY and I believe that is a center of excellence. Should I contact Empire or call RSofNY? Thanks!
