Day care cost$ for two kids -
DD1 will be almost 3 and DD2 will be close to a year old when I go back to work in September. I'm checking out day care centers in my area, and tuition is going eat 2/3 to 3/4 of my take-home pay. Family can't help and working from home isn't an option (I'm a guidance counselor and DH is a teacher).
Working moms of 2+, how are you doing this??
Eta: How do I find a reputable in- home site? I have the NY Dept of health website so I can see if they've been cited. I'll take suggestions. I'm looking in East Meadow, Bellmore, or Merrick.

I work 3x per week and so it's only 3 days and it is very expensive! Have you thought about group family places? I think they tend to be a little more reasonable than the traditional centers.

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
It is not easy!!! I am expecting #3 within a few weeks and daycare cost is definitely a concern!
I would first recommend asking fellow teachers at your/DH school about daycare. My DCs go to a in-home certified daycare that caters to teachers (close at 4 pm and off on school holidays and summer), the cost is a bit less and usually less # of kids on center. I would also ask local preschools if they have an daycare (in-home) recommendations.
I would also check with your local church/reliogious school. Our local catholic school has full day preschool and it is about 50% of the cost of a regualr daycare. (At our it starts at 3 years old but heard of others that start earlier).
And from my experience, you can handle more than you think, after DC#1, I didnt know how we could afford #2 daycare, but we did. And now we are having #3, I know that it will be hard but we will manage.
Good luck! And if you decide to go with a certified center definitely do Dependent Flex Spending - it will save you a few bucks in taxes.

My two girls are with a nanny 4 days a week and holy hell it's getting $$! It's almost 2/3 of my PT take home. I figure soon enough they will be in school (ok well no we still have a few years)...

Honestly - every month I tell myself that one day soon that $2500/month will be in MY bank account instead of theirs ...... (mine are only in daycare 3x a week, my parents watch them the other 2 days)
Other than that, it stinks -

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
it is rough - $2500/month. We thought about a nanny, but they love preschool/daycare and their friends. We are thinking about #3, but I think it would kill the paycheck.

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
Like others have said, I tell myself that daycare is temporary and that I will be $2900 richer once they are in school! Unless we do private school. At which point I just break down and refuse to think about it!

have you looked into an au pair??? it is much cheaper than a nanny and daycare. do you have an extra bedroom? or perhaps you can put your 2 kids together in one room and give the au pair the other room. its def worth looking into!

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
we have someone come to the house and/or our neighbor does in home care so we just drop the two off there. Much cheaper than a day care place.

No, I work in southeast Queens and my husband works on the south shore in Suffolk. I'd do all the pickups and drop offs.

Day care cost$ for two kids -
It's rough - especially now that they are adding electives.
I have a personal countdown going to 2015 - we will have paid off our couch, car and only have one daycare payment!!! Then maybe we can redo our kitchen LOL!

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
My two boys go to an in home daycare. She has 3 full-timers and 2 part-timers. I received a recommendation from a friend. However I did look her up through NYS.
I did call and check out another in-home but ultimately the recommendation from my friend helped with my decision. I know when she took on the 3rd full-timer she let the mother come in and observe her and how she works in her daycare.
The cost is inane but DS #1 is going to be 3 in april and DS #2 is 15 months old....about 1/2 my pay goes to daycare but it's well worth it. They love it!

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
Our kids attend full time preschool 9-3 everyday. We pay $2200/month for 2 kids.
In Manhattan, we got quoted more than that PER kid.
Living in the DC suburbs is much more affordable.

Re: Day care cost$ for two kids -
We pulled DS #1 from daycare when DS #2 was born. It would have been $2400 a month for both of them to go 3 days a week.
We pay a friend of ours $300 a week to watch both kids at our house 3 days a week and then my inlaws watch them at no cost 2 days a week.
My boss uses an au pair, because it was so much cheaper and they have the space in their house.

What I meant was if you were a guidance counselor in a LI public school and DH was a teacher in a LI public school then you should be able to manage the cost of daycare for two kids. Sometimes you have to learn to sacrifice. I'm stay at home because of the cost of daycare for two kids... there is no perfect answer. Good luck

I don't generally call people out but that was out of line. How can judge someone's financial situation without knowing them? Do your know their income to debt ratio? Do you know if they have a mortgage? Major medical bills? Student loans? These are things that cannot be sacrificed.

ITA you dont know her personal situation to make this kind of statement. How do you know that she already isnt sacrificing?
