Posted by teachermom I know people think they are helping these cats by feeding them but you are not. You are keeping them alive so they can live terrible lives. As far as those who have to "deal with it," they are the people who choose to NOT feed them and still have to deal with them ruining their property.
Really, because the cats are already there and I assure you, most of them won’t actually die, they can live on very little food. Feeding them is not the problem, not getting them fixed is the problem. Yeah, maybe my ferals have a “terrible life” but they’re fixed, have shots, get food and water and shelter and have someone who cares enough to go every day to check on them. I didn’t create this problem, but I saw all the feral cats on my property so I started feeding them so I could trap them and get them fixed. They were already all there thriving & breeding.
All of what I say has to do with a MANAGED colony, not with someone feeding cats and NOT doing TNR. If you’re feeding them you HAVE to get them fixed.
I moved into a place with a feral cat problem. I personally & out of pocket expense took hours to trap every cat, have them fixed and released them. I signed a contract with the shelter I used that I would continue to feed & shelter the cats. I got many of the kittens adopted. Several of the neighbors actually came over & thanked me, because before I had them fixed there were just tons of cats/kittens all the time, breeding, fighting, getting hit by cars, etc. Now that they are managed there are far less issues. The problem ALWAYS starts with someone letting their cat out or not fixing the cat, the problem is NOT feeding them, the cats would still exist, you probably just wouldn’t SEE them as much, but they would still be there peeing & pooping.
Other cats can’t “join” the colony, it just doesn’t work that way, cats are too territorial. People have been known to dump cats at a managed colony bec they know they’re getting fed, but that doesn’t mean that the new cats would be allowed to get any food there.
People $uck, they are irresponsible owners & they let their intact animals out & then you get this problem. Sorry you’re so inconvenienced by the cats. As someone who cares for 2 feral colonies I can assure you I HATE IT. I have to pay someone to go feed them when I go away, I have to spend $$ on food every week, I have to go every single day to the 2 colonies (I don’t even live there anymore but I have to feed them), I have to provide emergency vet care, I worry about them, I worry about people poisoning them, shooting them, “moving” them. All of which I have personally witnessed. The cats didn’t ask for this, you think they want to live in fear and cold, getting wet when it rains, not always eating enough? You think I want the responsibility, my time, my money? I am cleaning up someone else’s mess & the cats are the ones suffering. Your neighbors are trying to do the right thing by having them fixed. I have a deer problem, deer poop everywhere, all over the yard, they eat all my plants, but you know what, they’re animals, I can’t be mad at them for existing, I put a fence around my garden & a natural repellent. It’s amazing, no one feeds them, yet they’re still here.
For those of you with feral cats in your neighborhood, try to have a little compassion, use natural repellents, it's really not the cats fault, please don’t punish them
I can't believe that people think letting an animal starve to death- whether it be feral or not, is a humane way to control the cat population. I can't even wrap my brain around that concept. Wow.

Re: FERAL CAT PROBLEM-- PLEASE HELP- ABOUT TO LOSE IT!
We had a couple of feral cats in our area. One was very unfriendly but being we were outside a lot and it would just hang out with us. Once we got our dog, I have to say, I never see any cats around any more.

Re: FERAL CAT PROBLEM-- PLEASE HELP- ABOUT TO LOSE IT!
If you are going to feed the feral cats, keep them in your house. It isn't fair that I can't feel comfortable about letting my child play outside because of the feral cats you feed are pissing and shitting all over my yard. I know you love your feral cats, but think about your neighbors that have to deal with this as well. There is often questions on here about if we like our neighbors, well, if you are taking care of feral cats, I am guessing your neighbors don't like you.

FERAL CAT PROBLEM-- PLEASE HELP- ABOUT TO LOSE IT!
Yes, it is never ok to hurt an animal... this should be about figuring out how to keep them off your property in a humane way... and just because some of us choose not to feed them and don't want them around doesn't mean we want to cause them harm. However, I do have an obligation to my own pets. I am way more concerned about their health and well-being than I am about these cats. Stray/feral cats often have fleas and other diseases and like some have said you can't TNR every single cat out there so there are sick and unneutered cats running around... and when my DS is old enough to run around the yard am I supposed to just be ok with the cats that were using my yard as a bathroom and hope we found it all and cleaned it up before he went outside?? I just can't see how anyone would be ok with that.

Thank you for your completely uneducated contribution on how to care for feral cats & the results of a properly managed colony. If you read my post, several of my neighbors actually came over to thank me. WHY? Because THE CATS WERE ALREADY THERE “pissing and shitting” all over as you so eloquently put it. I REDUCED the population. I don’t love the feral cats, I wish they never existed, but I have a heart so I did the only thing I could, got them all fixed & hand tamed a bunch so they could be adopted out. If I didn’t feed them they would also STILL BE THERE, they would just be ripping open your garbage & killing the songbird population & fighting.

I don't feed the cats and I don't know of anyone on my block who does. I still hear them most mornings digging through our garbage (right under the bedroom window) and mating and fighting in the driveway. If someone were feeding them, they'd still be around but not digging under my window.

Exactly, I 100% agree. I don’t care that people don’t like them, who ever said I even like them? Just be humane & stop with all the anger towards the cats. It doesn’t help anything.

Excuse me, I moved into an apartment building where there were 3 sibling cats living. I was not the once initially feeding them, but began to because I am an animal lover and if they seemed hungry I would rather feed them then see squirrel remains around the parking lot and grounds of my building. I was building up trust with them so I could TNR them. I managed to catch one and TNR him and vet him OUT OF MY OWN POCKET to aide in the reduction of the population. It's not my fault they were there, it's because some insensitive ass didn't spay or neuter their cat and then decided to allow it outside. Or, any number of reasons. The feral population isn't BECAUSE of people like me or KittyTax, it's bc of nimwits who don't properly vet their animals and dump them or allow them to be "indoor/outdoor" cats. If you yourself stopped whining and actually tried to help resolve the problem by trapping ONE cat and having it spayed or neutered you'd be a part of the solution.

How is a feral cat any different from a possum, raccoon or squirrel? There just are more of them (cats) and we CAN do something about their population.

Re: FERAL CAT PROBLEM-- PLEASE HELP- ABOUT TO LOSE IT!
We had a big stray cat population on my block due to an old lady feeding them and not fixing them, she even set up a cozy shelter in her shed and everything. At the height of the issue two neighbors set up traps and either released them at parks miles away OR brought many to a kill shelter where they were put down, not sure who paid for that. Even after this was done the cat population came back due to the remaining ones that were not fixed and the old lady continuing to feed them.
Now the old lady who feeds them has died, house sold, their shelter gone and now most of the cats are gone as well. They have moved on to another block to find another sucker to feed them.
I agree they will always be stray cats, but if you choose to feed them you attract them to the block and everyone else has to suffer.

PP, I'm not saying that you supported this, nor am I debating you.
I'm just saying that this makes me sick. People can murder innocent people and get away with it, and poor animals are put to death for doing nothing other than being animals.

This exact thing happened on my block - I just found out about it this weekend. The original owner of my house was the woman that was feeding the cats (after trapping and releasing them) and set up a shelter for them in the back of her garage. Apparently, one of the neighbors used to take them and get rid of them. Deeply disturbing.

FERAL CAT PROBLEM-- PLEASE HELP- ABOUT TO LOSE IT!
A dog that is wild or loose is automatically picked up and handled but cats are always neglected or allowed to die a slow agonizing death because its "acceptable."
Cat shit is just like any shit - your backyard has more bird, possum, raccoon poop you can possibly imagine. As far as cat spraying that i can understand being annoyed with. Its just like when some insensitive dog owner allows their dog to piss in my garden and thinks nothing of it.
If it is a large population of stray cats I would simply as the neighbor in a kind fashion if they need assistance with TNR. IT is overwhelming to have a large population to try to TNR since its out of your own pockets. IT can be managed easily. Organizations are overwhelmed and you will get ZERO help for the most part unless the village/town gets involved.
We have TNR at the cost of money I earn for my business many cats. I have also donated to many shelters/animal rescues orgs in order to assist in finding homes for strays and managing feral cat colonies. Years ago cat colonies were a welcomed sign since they provide POISON free pest control! Now they are thought of as pests. They are animals who people have abused, neglected and let them turn wild. Many times people confuse feral with stray and kill poor creatures that could easily be adopted.

BTW most outside cats live 2-4 years so if you do a TNR you will have no colony within 4 years.

I never had this problem so I had no idea about this. Am I reading this thread right - that if you ever give food to a stray cat, you are then required by law to feed it and its colony forever? Even if you move? And possibly responsible to pay for neutering? This surprises me, I never heard of this, but if it is true then I am glad I read this thread!

I did not know about the trapping until after it was already done, as the old lady found out and there was fighting among the neighbors. The cat poop in my yard does annoy me, but I would never think to go that far with it, and I really liked the old lady who fed them and loved them so it was cruel all around. However the problem still remains when one neighbor feeds them they are attracted to the area and the other neighbors suffer with their property being a litterbox. Apparently 2 of the other neighbors dogs had eaten the cat poop and gotten very sick and that triggered the action.

How is a feral cat any different from a possum, raccoon or squirrel? There just are more of them (cats) and we CAN do something about their population.
If you want to feed stray cats, good for you, I don't have to like it or want them on my property so I am glad my dog keeps them out, he probably keeps the raccoons and possum out as well. There is nothing wrong with finding a HUMANE way to keep them off your property. I didn't say my dog is catching and mauling cats he's scaring them and they don't come back. Big friggin whoop.
And who is feeding raccoons or possum like they do stray cats?? Where I live have never seen a colony of raccoon or possum wandering through my property, digging it up and having babies under my deck. If I see ONE raccoon all summer that is a lot. And let's be honest if people DID see those animals as frequently as they see stray cats they would call the town in a heartbeat... traps would be laid out and those animals would be taken by the town and killed without a second thought. To me that is WAY more inhumane than people not wanting to feed stray cats.
You say something can be done about the feral cat population but in reality it isn't that easily managed. If it was, so many people wouldn't be complaining about it. I would bet money the cats my neighbor feeds have not all been TNR'd... every spring without fail you hear them at night fighting, mating, screaming and doing whatever else it is cats do. If my dog was outside using the neighbor's lawn as a bathroom and digging holes in their gardens, mating/fighting with other dogs in the neighborhood and growling/snarling at my neighbors, more than just a few people would be outraged just like those who are upset about the cat situation.

I don't know much about the habits of raccoon or possum or squirrels to know if they live in any type of herd setting. The next best example is geese, they are everywhere and poop everywhere and it's unpleasing. Regarding if I like feeding the cats? NO, the same thing Kittythetax wrote is how I feel. I wish the scenario didn't exist but people will do what they will do, and honestly if more people DID something (like TNR) instead of just complaining there would be less of a problem.
