Flying during late 1st trimester

I know I should call my doctor and ask but wanted people's opinions...
Has anyone ever flown around 11 weeks?
Did anyone's doctors advise against it?

It would be a very quick flight JFK to Charlotte (2 hours), and it would be week 11....

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

I flew to London when I was was around 10-11 weeks. I had no problems and my doctor was fine with it. Since your flight is so short you should be fine, but don't forget to drink water and try to get up at least once.

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

I flew at 6 weeks and I was fine, I asked not to go through the full body scanner so at LGA I had a pat-down and in Toronto I went through the regular metal detector as per my OBs office (although they said the scanners were probably fine, too). I am driving 8.5 hours at 10 weeks and the doctor said that was fine, too, just get out to stretch my legs every 2 hours or so (she recommended on a plane because of the air pressure to walk a bit every 1-1.5 hours).

Should be totally fine! The worst I would worry about is MS!

I flew to St. Thomas when I was around 13 weeks. Everything was fine. I believe it is safe to fly up until your third trimester.

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

I was under the impression that women were not advised to fly during 1st trimester because that is when women are most vulnerable to complicatins.
I personally didn't fly because I didn't want to risk hurling in an airplane bathroom. Chat Icon

Flying during late 1st trimester

Yeah...I'm on the fence over here. Not for hurling, just for miscarrying risks...

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

I understand some people are nervous but my doctor assured me there is no added risk to flights, especially short flights, and I know lots of women (including myself) who flew during the first trimester. My biggest concern as someone mentioned was using airplane/airport bathrooms with MS but worse things have happened!

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

It's perfectly safe to fly in the 1st &2nd trimesters..... it's when you get closer to the end when there is an issue due to air pressure causing labor.....

I just flew at 16 weeks. OB had absolutely no concerns. I felt and feel fine. Flight was the same as any other for me.

I flew at 4-5 weeks and the doctor told me it was totally fine. I was told that IF something were to happen to the pregnancy that early they wouldn't be able to do anything anyway. I flew again when I was 22 weeks and both times I was totally fine. I did the same as Meredith, I didn't go through the full body scanner.

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

I flew to Costa Rica at week 10 and it was very uncomfortable for me. My legs fell asleep all the time. I had to constantly be getting up and drinking lots of water. For charlotte it shouldn't be a problem.

It's perfectly fine.

They advise against flying at a certain point in the third trimester and airlines won't let you fly past 36 weeks.

I flew to Florida at around 20 weeks with my first and had no issues. I talked with my Dr beforehand and he just mentioned that he doesn't recommend flying after 34 weeks. He didn't mention anything about not flying during the first trimester, but I was already past that point.

This is not true about airlines. It depends on the airline on the policy of flying, most of them have no end flying date, they just tell you to be advised by your doctors, and others that do have restrictions you just need a note from your doctor.

I flew past 36 weeks, never had an issue with the airlines and called multiple airlines to find out policies.

Re: Flying during late 1st trimester

For my 1st child I travelled extensively for work and flew every week from the day I realized I was pregnant until 32 weeks when the Dr suggested I stop. I always drank a lot of water and after 20 weeks, was sure to get up and walk around a couple of times on each flight. I never had an issue.

For my 2nd child, my first flight was at 7 weeks and then flew approximately 10 more times until 32 weeks.

For my 3rd, I have scheduled flights when I'll be 10, 12 and 14 weeks and I'm not worried.
