2 yr old won't stay in bed

My 2 year old son started climbing out of his crib around February so we had no choice but to convert his crib into a toddler bed. He was doing well but recently started coming into my room around midnight and I started letting him sleep with me for the rest of the night. I'm getting sick of it. I tried the gate on his door and the door knob lock but he figured out how to escape with both!!!! I don't know what else to try besides an actual lock on his door but feel bad doing that. How do I get him to stay in his bed allll night????

my kid didn't come to our room to sleep at midnight, he came to wake us up

This is my crazy way... but it worked

I'd wake up, take him to his bed, (grab a pillow and blankets for me) Put him in bed with lots of kisses cuddles, whatever he needs, then lay near him, but not so he can feel you. Tell him its nighttime, we all sleep, say goodnight and close your eyes. Few nights of this.. Then next night, say you will check on daddy and come right back and that he should wait for you. Do it quick first few nights, next nights take a little longer, longer ... till you are just tucking him back in and going to bed. Eventually he stopped waking up.
