I was hoping that someone can help me figure this out. I just learned that my address is zoned for a school district that isnt particulary great. The elementary school is close to my house, but the middle school and high school are much further away than the other schools in my area.

Is there a way I can switch districts BEFORE my daughter enters pre-k so that she can travel from elemtary school to middle school and high school in the same district? I just want to make sure that this is an option and can be done.

Re: Zoned Schools

I don't understand (and it is probably just me.. I'm loopy today).

You ask if there is a way to get re-zoned so that: she can travel from elementary school to middle school and high school in the same district?

Currently her elementary school is in a different district than the middle and high school she will be attending? I didn’t know this was possible?

In any event.. if you are talking about requesting a different school within the district that you are zoned for, you can go to the district office and put in a request. You should have a reason beyond “I heard this school isn’t great.” Chat Icon My friend’s daughter is bussed out of her zone (within the same district) because only one of the elementary schools has the appropriate tools for her daughter who is special education. On the other hand.. another friend’s son registered late and gets bussed to another elementary school (within the same district) because there wasn’t enough room for him at the school he would have normally been zoned for and there wasn’t a thing he could do about it even though he kicked a huge fit.

Now.. if you are talking about crossing districts.. for example, you are living in the boundaries for the Sayville district but really prefer your child to go to Connetquot.. I don’t think you can do anything about that. You pay school district taxes and vote on school budgets, etc.. based on the district you live in.

Hope this helps!

Re: Zoned Schools

Is this LI?

Like the PP, I am also a little confused. Generally you are zoned for whatever district you are zoned for and there is no fighting that. You can't live in say Copiague, but decide you would rather send your kids to Massapequa because that is a "better" district. Even in districts with more than 1 school at each level (i.e. most districts have 3-4 elementary schools), it is very hard to get approved to attend the one you aren't zoned for.

If you district isn't great, I would take some time to look into private schools or possibly consider moving.

Unfortunately you are stuck. It's too bad that they don't offer school of choice here. Many other states do. But then again, most other states don't have 150 school districts within 100 miles of each other.

Other than move, no you are stuck. Schools was one of the first things we checked when looking at a house.

You pay a different district to attend there but it's not cheap.
