Question about Metformin...

Hi Ladies,

I went to my first OB appt yesterday and I am now confused and a little worried. I am 9 weeks preg and I have been taking 1500mg of metformin since I began my clomid cycles when TTC with PCOS. My RE told me to stay on it but my OB said that she would recommend coming off of it. When I asked her about it helping to prevent miscarriage she said "If you are going to have a MC you are going to have one" and that she had never heard of it having anything to do with MC. What kind of answer is that? Anyone else stop metformin after conceiving on it or did you just keep taking it? TIA!

Question about Metformin...

I took metformin for my 2nd round of ivf which is the one that worked. I don't have pcos but it was used to improve egg quality. My re had me stay on it until we had two appointments that we heard the heartbeat. It is supposed to prevent miscarriages.

Re: Question about Metformin...

I stopped it at 11wks. It passes through the placenta so most doctors will have you stop it around then.

Question about Metformin...

i was on it my whole pregnancy. ive never heard anything about it preventing mc but i have heard it can prevent GD and some other complications esp in PCOS girls.

personally i would listen to the RE cause they in theory should be more up on the research than an ob

same for me. i was really scared to come off it b/c i knew it was keeping my insulin levels even. a few weeks later my perinatologist sent me for my glucose test (which i failed both times no surprise) and now i monitor my sugar levels and take medication every day (not metformin but glyburide which is commonly used for insulin control in pregnancy)

a peri is totally different than an OB. she didnt say she was seeing a peri. but if it were between an OB and an RE I PERSONALLY would listen to the RE over the OB if given conflicting info. that doesnt mean she has to, its just what i would do. in her case she should probably go with whomever she trusts more.

No need to get on the defensive Chat Icon I just meant all OBs and REs are different and some OBs are the better more 'cutting edge' people to listen to. It all depends. It seemed in your post like you meant REs in general- but seriously there's no need to defend yourself here!Chat Icon

defensive? Chat Icon Chat Icon the only reason i quoted was cause you quoted first Chat Icon i didnt see the relevance of the peri since she didnt say she was seeing one - it just seemed irrelevant to someone who is deciding between the advice of an OB and an RE.

i was just answering the question with further clarity since she never mentioned seeing a peri - FWIW if it was between a peri, an RE and an OB id prob listen to the peri.

Re: Question about Metformin...

I was on it until 12 weeks. There is some science to suggest it *MAY* help prevent miscarriages in woman wiith PCOS but I believe by 12 weeks it no longer has that benefit. I was so happy to get off of it and was told that worse case scenerio I may develop getational diabetes but that it would be easily managed and that ultimately the choice was mine. I decided the less meds the baby got exposed to the better. And when I did have to deal with GD, I opted for diet control and eventually insulin over Glybitride (sp?), again, to avoid exposing the baby to drugs. Insulin doesn't cross the placenta. Best of luck to you and congrats!

I have been on Metformin for a while for sugar control. I had two chemicals on it so I tend to agree with your doctor...if you're going to MC it will probably happen anyway. At 9 weeks your chance of miscarriage is way low though so I wouldn't worryChat Icon
