Allergic reaction: milk??
DS has been EBF until 5 months (hes now 6 months) when we started giving a little Alimentum (he has reflux). This weekend I decided to try Similac Sensitive bc he never tested positive for dairy issues, we just started on Alimentum to be safe. And I had given up dairy.
Well, bad move. Within 20 minutes his face was so swollen he could hardly see, he was covered in hives and had mucous pouring out of his nose
I was about to rush Him to the ER when the dr called back and told me to give him Benadryl. It worked in minutes.
Some questions for those who have experienced this:
Am I looking at a milk allergy here? (a bad one?)
What's the long term prognosis? Will he outgrow it?
Is he more likely to have other food allergies?
Can they test him at this age?
I'm scared of this happening again...we see the dr next week.

Allergic reaction: milk??
I would see the Dr & also NEVER change formula without his advice.
We used alimentum & had to pay for the whole year. We switched to whole milk at 13 months with no issues.
I hope your baby is ok

if you've been EBF and eating dairy, its unlikely to be dairy allergy if he didn't react to your milk...
and usually milk allergy isn't a true allergy its more a sensitivity ...
could allergy to soy, coconut, or allergy to any of the crazy ingredients in the formula

and usually milk allergy isn't a true allergy its more a sensitivity ...
DD recently turned one and when I tried whole milk with her she broke out with the hives on her face. She was (still is now  ) ebf and has never had a problem with my milk and I have no dietary restrictions. They did a blood test which showed a minor reaction to boiled milk but they didn't test uncooked milk which is her main issue. I'm trying to get her to take soy or almond milk but so far she won't touch it. I do think she'll outgrow it but no idea when.

The dr. actually wanted him put on Enfamil AR, but I insisted on the Alimentum. This is why I felt comfortable switching. Did your LO have a reaction to other formulas prior to giving Alimentum?

Thank you for this. I have actually been dairy-free for four months since he had hives twice at 2 months old.
I also actually did a side-by-side comparison of ingredients and narrowed it down to the milk or coconut. I do eat coconut ice cream almost every night  so I have a feeling it is the milk.
I am just worried about the severity of his reaction and how this might indicate an allergy he may not grow out of or the likelihood of additional allergies...

If you have been diary free and tried anything but neocate or soy, then by his reaction it sounds like a severe case of a dairy allergy.
The fact that his face swelled makes me nervous and I would make an appointment with an allergist. They may not want to see him since he is so young, but push it! He will be starting solids soon and a lot of stuff has dairy in. You need to know what to avoid and what not to. You need to know if he can tolerate certain amounts. My DD has a dairy allergy. She still has it at almost 6 years old and I do not see her out growing it anytime soon. I do know of kids that have outgrown very severe cases by 5. You really never know.

I brought my 4 week old in to Dr. Strauss to be tested. He had no problem doing the skin testing on him so young. I would make an appointment ASAP with an allergist.
FYI, it could very easily be a corn allergy. Alimentum is the least corny formula on the market. Corn allergic are highly allergic to corn and all derivatives too, not just the protein (my kids are both allergic to corn).

My ds had a bad reaction like this about 6 months old. He is 4 and still has an allergy to whey casein and lactose- the 3 milk proteins. We had to use neonate as an infant. He saw an allergist at 2- they don't recommend seeing one sooner and he has an epi pen because his face swelled up and he vomited. We just give Benadryl when we see a rash start on his face. He even breaks out if someone east dairy and kisses him.
