Dogs and seizures

Anyone have experience with this. Our dog used to have them years ago then they went away. Now for the past few months he has been having them again, back to back and frequently. He shakes violently, throws up a lot, loses control of his bladder. It's heartbreaking to watch. We've taken him to the vet several times and he basically said we can put him on meds but it will shorten his life. At this point, I think the meds might be the way to go bc the seizures are awful. Poor little guy. Anyone have any advice to offer? this is breaking my heart. Thank you.

Re: Dogs and seizures

Google the link between dry dog food and seizures, and also a holistic vet. I watch a show called "Natural Companions" about holistic veterinary care and it's amazing, the seemingly simple alternative treatments and their results. I do remember there being a true story about a dog with seizures and within weeks, they had them under control with minor changes.

I'm sorry about your pup and good luck with your research. Chat Icon

Growing up, my Golden Retriever had seizures. She was put on medication. She lived to be 11. I was young, so I really don't know if that had any impact on her life span or not. Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you want to go the natural route people swear by Dr. Wen for herbals. I am more a conventional medicine type of person but I do know he has a reputation for being very good. He is not cheaper, probably as much as a conventional vet maybe even more. For me I am always about quality of life before length of life, so I would do whatever was in my budget to do. Are they sure he is not having seizures because of a brain tumor or anything? It might change the course of his treatment...

Sometimes you have to wait for a while to see the effects of herbal medicines. I am not totally sure but I think they are not always used in tandem with conventional medicine so you might need to choose between the two. If one doesn't work you could always try the other.

My pug used to have seizures. They were infrequent and he never had to go on medication for them. I would have put him on them if I had to though, it's terrible to watch. He didn't have them as bad as yours. I'm sorry you have to go thru this. How old is your dog?

Re: Dogs and seizures

Our yorkie had epilepsy. He took phenobarbital. But I swear he would not take his meds on a full moon.

He went throw the crying, foaming at the mouth and urinating himself and would be disoriented. they didn't give him long to live but he lived until 9 years old. Longer than what we ever expected.

I hope your dog feels better. Chat Icon

Thank you for sharing this information. I have a pug and he is 5 yrs old. His blood and heart have been checked. Vet says there is nothing that shows up wrong. I've been to two different vets for a second opinion. Both pretty much said the same.

Oh wow, he is a pug too. For mine it started about the same age as well and he had them several times in that year then he didn't have any others that I saw for many many years. They said it was just some sort of neurological issue and that unless it was happening regularly that they couldn't really do anything. They said he wasn't bad enough for medication. He would walk in circles and his eyes would roll back. He would collapse on the ground and twitch. He lost his bladder and bowels once or twice. There was a couple of weeks he did it several times then random times for the whole year. I was working full time so there could have been many more that I didn't see.

However I didn't witness many more for years after that. He lived to be 13 years old.
