Anyone have a Cape with your staircase in the middle of your house?
We have a cape set up this way and we are trying to figure out an extension. Anyone out there have a similar style home with any suggestions?

Yes we do. I hate that it's in the middle. We walk into the lr and the staircase is at the end of the lr. We have like a 2 1/2 foot hall way into the kitchen which opens up into the dining room (dining room is the extension)

Would you mind sharing a picture of your extension?

We have a cape with a staircase in the middle. The left is one large, opened room, to the right in the front is a formal LR (we use as an office) and the back is a kitchen with a 10x10 extension off the back.
I attached pics of the extension from inside and out, hope it helps you. (The pics are from when the house was listed )

I do. We have a very small cape and would love to do an extension. Our construction guy said we would get more space for the money if we did a dormer.

After speaking with 4 architects, I have the opposite feeling. You need to build a whole new second floor and then rework the 1st floor. I am not sure which is the better way to go. We are already 3/4 dormered on the top so we have 2 decent sized bedrooms upstairs with space for a small bathroom. So now I am thinking out the back of the house is the way to go. Only disadvantage is taxes will go up but I really like having the kids upstairs and us downstairs. Lends more privacy for me and DH especially as the kids get older.

My neighbors on both sides both have the same setup as me and both have extensions on the back. The one to the left has a half dormer and a mudroom extension, maybe 5x8?
the one to the right has a full extension on the back of the house, runs the full length and is about 10 feet back. Her top floor is completely undormered.
