Name Change Question
been married for almost a year now and still haven't changed my name, mainly because I am not sure what I want to do.
I am an attorney and would like to keep my maiden name professionally, but change to my married name in my day to day life. is it possible to do this? I am just not sure if I would be able to have it changed on my social security card and all that for taxes, but then have a different name at work.
anyone have experience with this? I've heard it can be done but not sure how to go about it

Re: Name Change Question
Most female attorneys I know (personally) keep their maiden names.
I'd assume you'd change it on your ss card, drivers licenses and just not professionally.

Name Change Question
I am an attorney and from my understanding what ever your legal name is the only name you can sign on legal documents
I kept my name - this way I had it professionally - so on taxes my dh and I have different names
but with anything to do with my kids I am my dh's last name and that is fine and with friends I am that too - they don't have to know my legal name
even when I fill out the kids paper work I put my legal name but I am always referred to by kid's last name
if you want to keep your name professionally I would not change or hyphenate are really the only options -

Re: Name Change Question
I changed my name after marriage for both personal/professional reasons, but my firm has a few female attorneys who still kept their maiden name...if you decide to use your married name as an attorney, you need to change your name on the NY attorney roll. To do this, all you need to do is file a name change application w the 2nd Dept and the NYS OCA and wait a few weeks for them to change it on the web site.

Name Change Question
What ever your legal name is what you need to use when you practice. So if you changed it at the ceremony then you need to practice with that name and change it with the court.

Name Change Question
What ever name is on your social security card should be the name on your paycheck (bc of taxes).
I've been married for 3 years, and all i have changed was my SS and 1 of my bank accounts. My license, passport (need to look into soon) and credit cards are in my maiden name.
My sister has been married for 5 years and changed everything but her SS. So her paycheck is her maiden name, but her email for work is her married name and she is referred to as her married name.
I really need to stop having a dual identity! :)
