Tell me the good the bad of East Notthport
We have begun house hunting and I messed up with our last house in Nassau bec the schools were awful in our town so we sold and now looking to go elsewhere - not Nassau - DH doesn't want Nassau taxes and small land - so now - looking western Suffolk and picking a good school district is my number one priority - we have 3 kids (6 and under)
We saw a house in East Northport that I loved - but I want to do my homework on the area before I even consider giving an offer!
How is the town in general? Schools look good on paper (great schools.org) - is this still the case?! How is the sports for the kids? How is the community? Activities for families? Shopping? Neighborhood full of families?
Thank you!

I grew up in northport. East npt can be different schools. If you want to fm me the address I might be able to tell you about the actual neighborhood.
I loved living there.

I used to work in the area. I hear nothing but great things about East Northport overall.

I grew up in Northport and looking back it was such an awesome town. The school districts are the best. I would move back in a heartbeat if I could.

It depends where as to what school district you'd be in. But generally both northport and john glen are good school districts. It's a nice area close to a lot and sometimes you can find older homes with great taxes.

I've had several clients from there and they were all white. Sorry, I couldn't help myself but threads like this totally crack me up. This is LI. You may run into some diversity which IMO is a GOOD thing, but with the exception of a couple, I don't think there are many really bad districts out there. JMO of course.

PS How do you know the schools in your town are so awful? It seems like your kids are very young. Is there really gang activity in kindergarten?

Actually there was a shooting a few years ago at a Huntington elementary school & in Huntington Station there is gang activity which sometimes spills over into Huntington Village (husband's friend's daughter needed facial reconstruction because of a supposed gang initiation where they attacked 2 random people).
Rambling good & bad off the top of my head:
Elwood School district is having some serous budget issues & the rumor is that they are going to have to merge with a neighboring school district (I attended the Board meeting where it was explained the viability of the school was not an option). Beautiful school, endangered of merging with a possible lesser desirable school district.
Northport-East Northport school district is pretty good. Like many, many schools on LI there is a drug problem. But they have strong services for both special ed & gifted students. They are revamping & renovating many schools in the district within the next few years.
There is a possibility of a housing development on the corner of Pulaski & Elwood. It's been in litigation for decades so whether or not it will actually happen is up for debate.
Community is very strong in both districts. Tons of community events to choose from. IMO it's a great place to raise my kids. The elementary schools have a display of artwork in Northport park every year. There are a ton of after school activities both in the schools & around town. Camps too. Beaches are great. Yacht clubs for sailing lessons. Plenty of shopping in the area & the outlets are about 15-20 minutes away. Soccer is a big sport in Northport. The rec league starts at pre-school (4-5yo). If you want more competitive, Cow Harbor League starts after 4th grade.
Every Thursday in the summer there are bands in Northport park. Every week in the summer there are a ton of musicals, plays, dance programs put on in Hecksher Park in Huntington.
Services were pretty good in terms of clean up from storms particularly if you live near a main road.
The downside per my husband is "it's in the sticks". Commute to Manhattan is longer and (gasp) it's not close to a parkway. That's from the guy who grew up in Nassau off the expressway.

Re: Tell me the good the bad of East Notthport
It is a great town I agree nice place to live and raise kids. It's the kind of town people don't leave or end up coming back. People are friendly In some ways has a New England feel. Great if you love the water boating kayaking etc. The town always finds a reason for a parade or gathering on Main St.
I think it's too far from the highway and as someone said adds to commute time. Shopping isn't too far but some roads are one way so traffic sucks. Also as someone else said if you like ethnic diversity there isn't much.

Re: Tell me the good the bad of East Notthport
I just moved to northport but I'm kings park schools (were specifically in fort salonga). But we chose this area for the schools. Kings Park is a small school district and supposed to be very good. Some northport homes are kings park school district.

I grew up in Enpt and LOVE it if DW would let us move there I would !!!!!
How is the town in general? Great-- there is everything you need to do
Schools look good on paper (great schools.org) - is this still the case?! YES i graduated from here.
How is the sports for the kids? good
How is the community? Activities for families? YES the libraries are great and there's downtown northport & huntington so close!
Shopping? there are a lot of malls nearby- well nearby considering most suffolk areas, not nassau. drive times probably less!!
Neighborhood full of families? yes my (moms) area (by hewitt square) always has different aged children around
