Braces....
So, my one son who is 7 needs braces. Did anyone get a second opinion? His 2 front teeth are horrible. He has an under bite. He only needs braces on the top and a retainer on the bottom.
My MIL pretty much called me naïve for not getting a second opinion, and saying all the dr.s just want $$. She was so condescending to me, and made me feel so bad that maybe I should. Anyone else get a second opinion, or wait??

Re: Braces....
I feel like that is really young for braces. Does he have all or most of his adult teeth yet?

Re: Braces....
DS is 7 and the dentist said that he might need braces but it's too early to tell. He also doesn't have all of his adult teeth yet. I would get a second opinion.

Re: Braces....
While 7 is really young for braces, if he has an under bite I can understand why the recommendation was given - so the new teeth that have to come in will have a place to go. I would get a second opinion though.

Re: Braces....
I have to agree that 7 is very young. Are all his upper teeth in? I am not a dentist so he could be right. I would 100% get a second opinion. You would get one for surgery why not for something major like braces. Especially in a young child. You shouldn't feel bad about it, but I would definitely get a second opinion from someone good.

Braces....
I would also get a second opinion. I know my SS couldn't get his braces till 15 because he had to wait for his baby teeth to all fall out. However at around 9yrs old they did out some pre -braces or spacers to widen his jaw and prepare it for braces in the future.

Re: Braces....
thank you....I just didn't like the way my MIL said it, very rude and condescending to me. She has always been that way, always questions why I don't do things HER way. This is MY son not hers. She always compares Jay (MY DH, and her son) to my boys. Thanks

Re: Braces....
Sometimes at 7 or 8 these days they do some pre braces work. I would go ahead and get a 2nd opinion but in my experience even within the same practice there may be differences in treatment plans.

Braces....
My daughter had full braces put on at 9, off at 11. She is now 14 and her smile is perfect.
My son, on the other hand, is almost 11 and not ready for his braces. His baby teeth are taking longer to come out and some of his adult teeth are not coming down on time.
Every child is different and it is possible that he's ready early.

Re: Braces....
My Dd is 9 now, but got the first phase of braces last year at 8. It will be done in 3 phases. From what I understand, it is common to start at a younger age and in stages. It can't hurt to get another opinion, but just ignore MIL. Times have changed since her children were young.

Re: Braces....
I personally would never start my child with braces that young. I waited until middle school and will with my second. I believe the doctors are all in it for the money now as kids our age never got braces that young.

Re: Braces....
I'm not really getting the in it for the money. In my experience you pay a set price for the braces based on your child's need and treatment plan, doesn't matter how long they are on for or when they start.
I have younger siblings and the youngest has very bad teeth and had braces starting at 8 with a large improvement already within 1 year.

This is my understanding of how it is being done now too. I think by doing it this way, they are done wearing them earlier.
My kids will need braces, but DS's teeth that are next to the front ones still haven't come in. They have been out for a few months and are going in sides ways.
It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion

Re: Braces....
I got braces at 8 because the teeth on either side of my front teeth were angled back. They were on for a few months and the teeth were fixed.
However, I needed to have the teeth on either side of those teeth pulled before getting the braces. When those teeth came in, three years later, they were above the gum and messed with the angled teeth, which became crooked again. So I got braces for a second time at 12.
This was a long time ago and new things are always being learned- but I would absolutely get a second opinion especially if your DS has not lost most of his baby teeth.

Braces....
There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to ortho treatments. Some get jaw expanders and some get the wire & brackets ect ect. Did your reg dentist tell you that your son is ready & needs braces? I waited for our dentist to hive us the green light to get a consultation for treatment. I figured he knew best since he's been treating my son for years. My12 & has had his braces on for about 8months. He still had baby teeth but no brackets were placed on those teeth & permanent teeth grew in nicely. I would arrange some consultations before you decide what is best for your child.

Re: Braces....
My DD is in a palatal and mandibular expander since she's 7(she's 8 now). She will eventually need braces but they are doing early intervention with expanders first.

Re: Braces....
My DD is 9 and I am in the same position of possibly getting a 2nd opinion. She has had 3 baby teeth pulled due to overcrowding and new teeth are still coming in at an angle. It seems the new way is to do braces in phases. DD will likely be getting bottom braces on for 1 year or less to act as a spacer for a angled tooth. Then they will be removed and she will probably need full braces when she is around 11-12. I am happy with the ortho we are seeing but will likely get another opinion just to be sure there are not other options.

Braces....
My almost 8 yr old needs braces too! I was stunned and went for a second opinion. The second ortho actually suggested a more involved procedure. From what I understand, they do it n two phases to avoid having to pull permanent teeth later. The doc showed me an x-Ray of his still unerupted permanent teeth that are all crooked in the skull. So this Phase 1 treatment will make room for the permanent teeth to come in the right place. It is $$ too and some insurances don't covr it! If you are in Nassau let me know. I can send you reccomendations.

Braces....
My ped dentist was the one to send us to the orthodontist when my daughter was 8 - said she had the "mouth age" of a 10 year and felt she was ready to start treatment. He doesn't get a kick-back from the ortho and we went off to the ortho who also agreed. He took x-rays and went on from there, starting with a palette expander. My son is now 8 and I had the ortho check out his mouth and he told me to hold off another year - so not all dentists are in it for the $$!!
Good luck and if you need a recommendation in Suffolk - I would gladly refer you!

Yes, would appreciate a recommendation! We suspect our 8 year old will need braces...

Re: Braces....
Just to throw this in: The ortho wanted to put braces on me at 7, but my mom wanted to wait until after my First Communion....so I got them right after I turned 8.

Re: Braces....
My brother got them early and ended up having to do them twice. Things may have changed but I still think to young as the mouth isn't fully developed yet
