HIGH fever... UPDATE at bottom
Just an ear infection?
I am livid ... got a call that DD had a 101.7 fever around 130. Immediately called our Ped to take her in and they essentially said they were booked solid. As in NO we cannot see you.
I pressed the subject and they told me to come in at 7pm but there was no promise on the wait. The receptionist actually said "we actually close at 5 today but we are booked solid through 7". I said fine, we wil go to urgent care and that was that. (DD passes out at 630).
Urgent care said ear infection.
She had advil at 130. By 430 her fever was pushing 104. She was lethergic, almost shaking/jittery in her movements.
She sat on my lap with her head on my shoulder from 4-6pm.
She had advil again at 630 and passed out.
Is this normal for an ear infection? She has had ear infections in the past and not been THIS out of it/high fever.
The ped is another issue entirely and I will call them tomorrow. Their front office is god awful and if it werent for the docs, we would have been out of there LONG ago.
Kinda worried about my baby! Worried to go to sleep, worried she is going to spike an insane fever tonight!

Re: HIGH fever...
The shaking and being lethargic would worry me. Did you tell her doc about this or just the fever?

Re: HIGH fever...
My 13 month old DD had a high fever (103.5) a few weeks ago and it was a double ear infection. Turns out it was so bad that one round of antibiotic wasn't enough to completely get rid of it. She had to go on another one to knock it out. She's fine now. So, yes, it could just be an ear infection! for you and your daughter. Those nights were hard for her and scary for me! To lower the temp a little I had to alternate Tylenol and Advil. Within a couple of days on the antibiotic she was sleeping better and fever was gone. Good luck!

Re: HIGH fever...
could be ear infection. I use tylenol suppositories on DD with 104 fevers per my pediatrician. brings fever down quickly and makes me less nervous.

Re: HIGH fever...
Yes could be the ear infection... Could also be something viral on top of it. Coxsackie or rosella? My kids get high fevers I alternate Motrin and Tylenol. I set my alarm for the middle of the night dose and check on them. Cool rag on their heads when it's high 105ish.
As for the ped uhhhh I think we go to the same ped. I keep hearing bad things about the office! I've been lucky except for a few lone wait times for a sick visit but to me that is understandable!
Sorry you had to deal with that and hope your dd gets better soon!

Re: HIGH fever...
Could be adenovirus. My daughter had a severe double ear infection back in Oct and had 104.7 or so. She refused to be touched and has a high tolerance for pain. She had just gotten over strep so they were concerned she was septic so we ended up in the ER on Halloween. Tests revealed that she had adenovirus. Ped said it can cause anything from ear infections, to gastro symptoms. It causes high fevers. She might have that.

HIGH fever...
I've been in urgent care a lot recently with DS 2 (thinking he had an ear infection since he's been miserable without a fever) and they said they have been seeing a lot of the summer viruses - coxsackie and such. It could be an ear infection coupled with a virus - with coxsackie, I recall my kids having the high fever before the blisters popped out so we had no clue what it was until the end.
Hope she feels better! I can't believe your ped was that booked up!

Re: HIGH fever...
PM pediatrics treated DS on mother's day (ped was closed, but I called them and they said to take him). Fever of 104. Turns out it was roseola. Coxsackie is also crazy now. But unfornuately you probably won't know either for sure until a rash breaks out. As as soon as DS got the roseola tash I called ped and they let me take him off the antibiotics. So it could very well be one of those.
by the way... that is exactly why I did not choose them for our ped. We are super happy with ours, they are awesome, they fit is in anytime if he is sick, even sunday mornings are when the office is closes the calls are ALWAYS forwarded to one of the 3 doctors.
Hope she feels better soon definitley alternated tylenol and motrin/advil to keep it under control if it won't go down. tylenol every 4 hours, motrin every 6... but you can do one of those 2 hours after the other one if needed. I only do that when he has a really high and persistent fever.

Re: HIGH fever...
My DD is just getting over a fever virus. We had a scary situation once where her fever spiked (unexpexctedly obviously) at just over 104 and she had a febrile convulsion- so after that if she has a fever I will set my alarm to take her temp and give her motrin throughout the night.

Re: HIGH fever...
thank everyone! She slept well last night, 101-102 this morning but is OK with advil.
She did have 2-3 tiny white sores on the side of her tongue (like aggrivated taste buds) and I noticed them, urgent care did not. He said "possibly" coxsackie. Could just be something viral coupled with the ear infection.
There is coxsackie, roseola and fifths going around daycare so I guess time will tell!
I feel more calm today since the night was not nearly as rough as I expected but I am still pissed with the Ped situation.

Re: HIGH fever...
My dd was running a really high fever of 105 that we couldn't break. Took her to the ER turned out she had an ear infection. So although it's not common you can really get high fevers with ear infections.
I would decently go back to the Ped. Hope your lo feels better.

Re: HIGH fever...
so yah, im fairly certain she also has coxsackie. Off to the ped at 420 (to diagnose and speak with the docs about yesterday)
She has tiny sores on her tongue and in her throat, also one little tiny pimple looking thing on her cheek, one on her lip.

does sound like coxsakie Hope she feel better quick!! Just wanted to add that when my DD spiked a high fever like that (and was acting the same way) it turned out to be a UTI.

Re: HIGH fever...
My DS had a 106 fever and it was an ear infection. It was about two weeks before he got his tubes in. I called my ped and they told us to go straight to the hospital. He was 11 months. It was really scary.

Re: HIGH fever... UPDATE at bottom
So Friday I took her to the Ped ... I noticed tiny sores in her mouth. Yes, she has coxsackie. The kicker... NO ear infection. So Urgent Care had us pay for and start her on antibiotics that she didn't need. Her ped said her ears are PERFECT when 12 hours before, they urgent care doc said she had a bad right inner ear infection.
Oh well. 48 hours later and she looks a milion times better already. Luckily, seems like a mild case of coxsackie, sores limited to her throat/tongue only!
I knew it wasn't just an ear infection

HIGH fever... UPDATE at bottom
I know from my own 3 that sometimes viruses, especially bad ones, can back everything up and inflame the ear drums so they could look like theyare or are on the verge of an iinfection. Happened to my oldest a few times, my son when he had Roseola and my youngest when she had a bad virus last year.
Glad she's feeling better!

premier care bellmore on merrick rd. who knows, maybe her ear was red but the ped said it was "perfect" 12 hours later. Maybe those 2 does of antibiotics did the trick

I only take my son to PM Peds. They haven't been wrong yet with a diagnosis... The regular clinics don't always have a pedi on staff....
Her ears may have been red or had fluid. My son could have an ear infection one day and be clear 24 hours later.... It was strange..
