Oh I agree. I was just addressing the OP
I got that!! Just making sure EVERYONE knew there are no cons.
I'm not against legalizing it at all. I just still have questions that I haven't seen answers to.
For instance, are the tax benefits helping states that legalized it? Aren't there still going to be dealers who lace it with crap? Can you grow your own? Will it be legal to smoke in the presence of minors? Will smoking and driving be permissible? Will there be limits? Will people be allowed to smoke on the job?
Things like that...I guess I just see other problems arising from making it legal. Again, I'm NOT against making it legal, I just wonder what ramifications will arise.
I'd imagine it would be like alcohol. You can't drink and drive. Most places of employment will not allow you to drink on the job. Etc.

- I think tax benefits will get more states to join in. Colorado is setting the bar - Dealers may still cut it but why go to a dealer if you can by from the State legally and pure with options (again look at Colorado) - however you can still by moonshine and other non-taxed tobacco now. - Its still legal to smoke cigarettes in front of minors which causes harmful lung decay? - Again look to Colorado which does limit per purchase amounts. - I can't smoke in my job now. Theoretically, I can't drink either (tho we do). Still our building has a no smoking rule and that applies to cigarettes and candles or incense. So I see no change if pot is legalized. - Grow your own? Haha already happens. Just don't have to do it inside anymore.
ETA - on the job question I think every job has its own rules. I know a lot of contractors that let you smoke on the job but won't let you THINK about a beer. I doubt they'll let you smoke pot as it could say it was impairing your ability to say use a forklift.
Ironically, I drove through San Fran and folks were toking up on the sidewalk and blowing it into the faces of the folks passing by, tourists and locals alike. Locals seemed annoyed but moved on, the tourist seemed either amused or shocked. (some both).
That sounds really classy...

Re: What are the pros to making pot legal?
We live in Denver and a large portion of the enormous taxes collected from legal marijuana are going towards education. Police are being trained to spot "stoned" drivers and they will face similar penalties to DWIs. There are also limits as to how much you can carry for "personal consumption" or you will be faced with a citation. The legal suppliers are required to have cameras on their supply at all times. The one issue the suppliers are facing is that banks won't take their money as its techinically against the law in the eyes of the federal govt. So they are having to launder money etc. Its crazy!

What are the pros to making pot legal?
"Colorado expects to take in about $184 million in tax revenue from marijuana in the first 18 months after legislation -- and much of that money will be funneled into teaching kids to stay away from pot."

Courts and jails won't be caught up with nonsense of people getting caught with weed
This is exactly what I was going to say. They'll be able to focus on more serious issues.

WOW... that's disgusting and should be against the law. I don't smoke it and sure as hell don't want someone blowing it in my face.
As for the original question. The only issue I have is when the smoke/smell gets into my apartment. As I said, I don't smoke it and don't want to smell it. Feel the same way about cigarette smoke. Only difference is I can't get a contact high from cigarettes.

What are the cons? And I mean that in the sense of - if you aren't sure what the pros are, ask yourself what the cons are or put them here so people can counter-argue or make a case against them.
There are practically NO cons at all to making pot legal.
1. You cant die from pot. 2. You cant overdose on pot. 3. You cant get addicted to pot. ~~~With the caveat that some people need it to cope. Its not a physical addiction. 4. Its safer than alcohol. 5. Contrary to popular belief it is NOT a gateway drug.
Will people drive when they are high? yes. The good news is it actually does not really impair your driving. I cant tell you how many people I know who drive after smoking and say "it actually makes me more careful". To be CLEAR I don't condone it.
The biggest pro is that it can put the drug cartels out of business in Mexico.
....and bring in revenue, and help people with illness, and clear out the jails for people who are smoking pot. Jail overcrowding for pot is ridiculous by the way.
It sure does impair your driving!!!!! There was just a few cases in the last few months of someone driving while being high. The only good thing I see is the taxing, that is it!!!! Sorry dont knock me its MY OPINION!!!!!

As for the smoking and driving. I think it needs to have the same rules/laws as drinking and driving. Same with just smoking it walking down the street. Can't do that with alcohol. Shouldn't be allowed with weed.

I wonder how easy that will be to prove-with alcohol they have the breathalyzer test.

Hate to tell you people are walking down the street all the time smoking weed. They smoke it with the vaporizers. You can't smell it and you would think they are just smoking the electronic cigarettes.

Right. And people walk around with alcohol in all different types of cups. Still illegal when they get caught.

Honestly? This will be JUST like alcohol in that some people will be more/less affected than others.
Since pot makes you mellow, IMHO, its LESS dangerous than alcohol when we are talking about driving. I do NOT condone it.

Doesn't booze make you mellow too though? I know it does for me. Mellow as in slowed down reaction time. And if you are too mellow, you are in danger of falling asleep. Booze or pot or coke or ANY drug is just not a good mix with driving. Period.

Driving stoned is the same as driving drunk. You are impaired. Same if you drank a few swigs of Nyquil.
I could NEVER drive stoned. I have a hard enough time driving if I forget my glasses (I use them at night only)

What are the pros to making pot legal?
I am extremely shocked that many people are for this!!!
As a teacher, I can go outside to smoke a cigarette during lunch (I don't smoke, but have the option). So at lunch, I can now smoke weed, and then teach your children?!?!?!
I do not want to walk down the street with my kids and have people blowing smoke in their face or walk through the smoke with them. That is gross and teaching kids that drugs are okay. What's next??? Legalizing cocaine???
Call me a prude, but I am completely against this and only problems can come from it. Cigarette sales have been going down and now we are introducing something else to get kids hooked on?

You can legally go out to a restaurant or a bar and have an alcoholic beverage or three during your lunch break too. Doesn't mean you will. If it's legalized, I'm sure it will be treated similarly to alcohol meaning you can't just walk down the street blowing smoke around, just like you can't walk down the street with an open container.

Kids will smoke pot if it legal or not. Just like cigarettes. You can't buy them under 18 but at 14 that didn't stop me. So why not legalize it and control it and make money off it to benefit us with the taxes that are raised.
And if a teacher is going to go outside and get high they are probably already doing it. But I think it's no different than alcohol. Why doesn't a teacher get a drink or two at lunch..... Because they know they shouldn't so they wait til they get home. I think you need to give people credit. People will know what is right and wrong and those that don't would already be doing it.

I didn't see the tie-in to homelessness earlier in this thread, but acc to the Dept of Homeless Services, NYC had nearly 54,000 people in shelters on 6/29 (that doesn't count the people who slept on the streets). According to a 2013 street-count, San Fran had 7,350 homeless in both the shelter AND the street. Yes, San Fran is about half the size of NYC, but NYC has almost 8x the homeless (and again, the NYC number doesn't include the people who slept on the street).
