haven't read too many details on all of this - but will there be an age limit?

You have to be 21 to purchase and public consumption is illegal.

Just like alcohol I guess.

Second-hand contact highs?
Do you want your kids smoking pot?
Lung cancer?
Reduced brain cells.
Lethargy.
Driving with people high on the road.
Addiction.
Increased need for rehab.
Did I mention health problems?

And this is different from alcohol how....?

What are the cons? And I mean that in the sense of - if you aren't sure what the pros are, ask yourself what the cons are or put them here so people can counter-argue or make a case against them.

There are practically NO cons at all to making pot legal.

1. You cant die from pot.
2. You cant overdose on pot.
3. You cant get addicted to pot.
~~~With the caveat that some people need it to cope. Its not a physical addiction.
4. Its safer than alcohol.
5. Contrary to popular belief it is NOT a gateway drug.
Will people drive when they are high? yes. The good news is it actually does not really impair your driving. I cant tell you how many people I know who drive after smoking and say "it actually makes me more careful". To be CLEAR I don't condone it.
The biggest pro is that it can put the drug cartels out of business in Mexico.
....and bring in revenue, and help people with illness, and clear out the jails for people who are smoking pot. Jail overcrowding for pot is ridiculous by the way.
I am extremely shocked that many people are for this!!!
As a teacher, I can go outside to smoke a cigarette during lunch (I don't smoke, but have the option). So at lunch, I can now smoke weed, and then teach your children?!?!?!
I do not want to walk down the street with my kids and have people blowing smoke in their face or walk through the smoke with them. That is gross and teaching kids that drugs are okay. What's next??? Legalizing cocaine???
Call me a prude, but I am completely against this and only problems can come from it. Cigarette sales have been going down and now we are introducing something else to get kids hooked on?
Kids will smoke pot if it legal or not. Just like cigarettes. You can't buy them under 18 but at 14 that didn't stop me. So why not legalize it and control it and make money off it to benefit us with the taxes that are raised.
And if a teacher is going to go outside and get high they are probably already doing it. But I think it's no different than alcohol. Why doesn't a teacher get a drink or two at lunch..... Because they know they shouldn't so they wait til they get home. I think you need to give people credit. People will know what is right and wrong and those that don't would already be doing it.
lipglossjunky...do you have kids??? at 18, do you want them smoking pot?
I have 2 kids and cah deal with them drinking later on. I won't be happy with cigarette smoke, but pot brings it to a whole other level.
I do have a son and wouldn't care if he smoked occasionally.
My dh and I both have in our lives and I consider us to both be very successful. So I don't see why my DS would be any different.
^^ Agreed. I'd prefer my niece and nephew smoked pot instead of drinking. No one has ever died from a pot overdose or become addicted to it. People don't smoke pot and then decide one day to try heroin for the hell of it. The gateway drug argument is a load of crap.
Yes, I do. And I know that my stepdaughters have and probably still do.
I am fine if my son does when he's older as well. All the pot smokers I know in my life are responsible professionals and parents.
Not something to get the panties in a bunch at all.
Eta IMO alcohol is wayyyyyyy more dangerous. And I have seen first hand the damage drinking can do. Alcohol is a debilitating drug.
Re: What are the pros to making pot legal?
I see no cons to having marijuana legalized, expecting and enforcing the same restrictions/laws that are in place for the use of alcohol. I have found that the people I know (including my husband) who are most opposed to legalization are people who have not had experience with it or who had overindulged in it at a younger age and thus had a bad experience with it. In the same way that alcohol should not be abused, neither should marijuana. In the same way that alcohol should be enjoyed, so should marijuana, in my opinion. I look forward to seeing it legalized in my state some day.
