GE front loader.
I needed to replace both washer and dryer after Sandy.
I went to Marlin appliance in Seaford and found they were actually cheaper than the big box places, had the loading size I wanted, and all in stock for delivery.
I also ended up getting several hundred back in rebates.

samsung got both washer (front loader) and dryer from there. Good prices 0% financing if needed and at the time they had a special where I got the stands for them for free.
if the washing machine is that old I would think the dryer maybe too and would probably replace the dryer at the same time.

Re: Recommend your washing machine (and where you got it)
When I moved into my house in early 2009, the washer broke within a week or two, and we bought a new, high-end washer and dryer from Sears (Kenmore). Front loader washer, steam dryer, all the bells and whistles.
Last year (2013), my washer broke again and couldn't be fixed ... or the cost of the part to fix it was astronomical compared to buying a new machine.
I did NOT have a good experience with Sears' service department ... very frustrating to get a service call at all (long waits, no narrowed down window, no shows) and the service people weren't helpful.
So this time, I went with a top loading, more mid line GE washing machine. I bought it at Jay's appliance in Levittown. They are a small store and I find them to be very helpful and honest (no pushy "upselling") and their prices are very competitive. They are good with scheduling delivery, calling you before they come, etc.
I've heard, and the appliance salesman at Jay's, confirmed that the front loaders with a lot of electronic bells and whistles tend not to last that long because once the electronics/computerized stuff goes (and they do tend to go quickly), they can't be fixed. I also had problems early on with things getting caught in the "seal" of the front loader door and realized I had to put my son's little socks in a mesh lingerie bag or something as to not damage the machine (which was never told to me when I bought it, only when I had to call in a Sears repairman).
My GE top loader is large and I can fit in huge loads of quilts, bedding, beach towels, etc. with no issues. Mine has an agitator (felt it was better for getting clothes clean after doing research), but I know many people LOVE their no-agitator top loaders. With mine, you can select load size (or it will automatically sense it and fill up the appropriate amount) and you have various options for water temp, cycle. It does the job and I wish I hadn't gone for such a fancy, high-end machine back in 2009 given it didn't last long at all!

Thanks Christine! I've heard to stay away from front loading, high tech washers too. Moms friend had to replace the circuit board on her fancy washer multiple times. Not cheap either.

Re: Recommend your washing machine (and where you got it)
i would not recommend buying anything from sears as i have had horrible customer service issues with them in the past for other items. We bought our washer/dryer from PC Richard, Maytag Bravos.

Recommend your washing machine (and where you got it)
LG, 2 & 1/2 years ago, Home Depot - on sale. LOVE them, have no issues (we got the washer & dryer) - washer is the front load style top loader, and the dryer is front load. Love them.
