Spinoff: If you has 5k to spend on family vaca
Where would you go with your school aged kids for a one week vacation during a school break?
This is sort of a spinoff from my post of how much does it cost for a beach resort vaca. My budget is more like 5k vs the 7 k someone mentioned it would cost. As much as my kids and I would like it I just can't justify spending that much on 5-7 days.
I want something relaxing low key (as much as low key gets with kids) and ideally all inclusive. I have been to Lancaster, water parks, theme parks etc and that is not the type of vaca I'm looking for this time.

All inclusive something in Jamaica would fit your budget. I think the airfare to Aruba would put you over, although it's my first choice. If not, Gulf Coast rental in Alabama or Florida! Beautiful beaches, low key, lots to do and comfy- a home rather than a hotel.

How about a cruise from NY to the Bahamas? That takes airfare out of the equation.

Look into Jamaica or Puerto Plata. There are usually cheaper packages then other destinations. You should also poke around on groupon, living social and travelzoo, but you would probably have to wait until closer to your travel dates.

I would go on a cruise since the airfare alone will eat a huge portion of that. I was looking to go to St. Thomas over a school break. The airfare was over $1,000 a person vs. the $5-600 that it normally is.

I want to try Hard Rock Cancun, looks beautiful. For 6 nights about $3,800 but you'd probably go over budget on airfare.
Good luck with your planning! :)

I'd definitely look into a cruise out of NY to the Caribbean!

I agree a cruise is doable. However my first and only cruise I went on the day hurricane Irene was coming in and it was a bad experience for all. I was trying to avoid a cruise but we may have to go this route.

Island vacations are expensive. What about a cruise? Same island feel, but could be done in your budget depending on the ship/cruise line, category and itinerary.

We were able to get what I believe to be an amazing deal for Christmas week. Our round trip airline tickets for 5 on southwest from islip to ft lauderdale came to $1200. And then we booked a 5 night cruise with 2 cabins for $2500.

Wow that is great airfare, you really lucked out. I just priced flying into MCO to cruise Disney the week of Christmas, and flights are almost $800 a person. Ridiculous

Wow that is great!! My kids are 11 and 8 and haven't been to Disney and prob won't be going any time soon. They feel bad about it! I know it would be way more than 5k esp on school breaks.

You could consider taking them February break. We did that this year, and went Tuesday to Tuesday (they missed 2 days of school). The airfare was cheap then. Most places don't have a winter break so it really wasn't crowded at all. It would be WAAY less thank 5k, but a totally different vacation than an island!

It would be less than 5k I bet, even during a school break. All depends on where you stay.

We did a 7 night cruise from NYC to Eastern Carribbean (Nassau, Bahamas / Private Island in Bahamas/Turks and Caicos). aboard Carnvial. We paid $579pp and were given $100 on board credit. We left in May which was perfect.
We boarded at 4:00pm - settled in, had dinner, checked out the ship. The next morning we woke up and we were in the Carolina's. The weather was perfect. If you cruise from NY - I highly recommend leaving in the Spring time. Winter is much colder and rougher waters.
That was our first cruise and to date it has been one of our best vacations.

We just booked Puerto Rico for less than 5k. El Conquisitador looks awesome and is very reasonable.

Pretty sure we did Atlantis for about 5k (hotel and airfare only) and we stayed at the Cove, which is supposed to be the nicest hotel. You can stay at Beach Towers for much less and it is an awesome family vacation.
For the most bang for your buck, the AI resorts in the Dominican republic are probably your best bet. We have stayed at one a few years ago and it was super cheap. Coloniel Majestic I think it was.

May is not a school break though, which is why your fare was so cheap. School break is double even triple.

When are you going to El Con? We are thinking of booking this for next month when the kids are out of school, since the rates are really good.

We are going the first week of November. Schools in Fairfax County in VA have teacher workdays that week. Our direct flights from DC were about $450 and the hotel was less than $300 per night. Very reasonable and the hotel looks fantastic. Some people think the trains to separate cliffs and the boat to the beach are negatives but I think the boys will love it.
eta: I am now on the school calendar and we decided not to travel during xmas break because flights seem to be double and hotels are triple the normal rates. spring break is much more reasonable.
we are planning around random days our school district has off that are not national breaks. at our school, we have a few days off in the beg of nov and also the last week of January. I plan to do Caribbean trips then and during spring break.
