Anyone convert a wood burning fireplace to gas?
I'm wondering what the cost was and if you can recommend someone to do it.

We will be doing this next year once our kitchen renovations are over. I think all it takes is bringing up the gas line, which any plumber can do. You can buy the gas insert separately. As far as cost, I don't think the plumber should be too expensive but the glass inserts vary widely in cost.

Can I ask what the pros to this are? Is it just a personal preference?
When we were looking for a house I really wanted one that had a fireplace...
most had gas but I was very excited when we found "our" house and it had a wood burning fireplace.

I think it's more personal preference. For us, I like the idea of being able to flip a switch and turn it on. It's inexpensive to run given we have gas already in the house. We don't have to worry about lugging wood. But, what's really got us going on this is that we just bought this house. We used the fireplace once and my house stinks like fireplace. The chimney was cleaned chemically recently. There's nothing there. All the ashes are gone. I don't know why this smoke like odor is in the house but I can't stand it.

I have a gas fireplace. I'm in the process of upgrading the gas log kits. The one I am getting includes everything from the logs to the glowing embers plus remote control for an 18" set is $1,300 plus another $75 for installation. Larger kits, of course are more $$. If you do not have a gas line already brought into the fireplace that will be an additional cost which is done by a plumber.
The pros are it is a lot cleaner than wood burning and it adds warmth to my entire first floor and is economical to run so my heating bills aren't very high in the winter months.

When we were looking for a house I really wanted one that had a fireplace...
most had gas but I was very excited when we found "our" house and it had a wood burning fireplace.
The smell! The burning wood was awful and would make the entire house stink for days.
I would get really bad headaches from it.
We don't have gas in our neighborhood so we converted our fireplace to a pellet stove which actually heats the whole house and we don't use oil for that anymore.
The pellets don't smell either though- thank GOD

We had this issue too.
It happens all the time when you burn wood.
I was sick for days after using it. Horrendous.

We just did it and my husband did the gas. The unit was about 4500, it's a Mendota which is one of the best out there. So happy we did it!!!

Agreed, we also just converted to gas and as another pp said we purchased a Mendota as well. Which is one of the best out there. We love it and are so happy with it so far!! The unit including install was $4600, we purchased it from Sleepy Hollow Fireplace and Stove in Deer Park.

Oh ok. I get that. We have a pellet stove also for heat but I just LOVE the coziness of watching a real fire burning, the crackling, the smell, etc. Hopefully it doesn't make anyone sick

I suffer from migraines and that smell is a huge trigger for me.

I always thought I would love the crackling and smell...turns out it triggers migranes for me! Such a shame becuase I really wanted to make it all work.
We will also be converting after our kitchen reno is complete.

So happy we converted. I hated that smell. I felt like it stuck to couch cushions and in my drapes

My inlaws converted the fireplace in their bedroom to gas as they felt it was too messy to bring wood upstairs and have to clean the ash, etc. They kept their downstairs fireplace wood burning.
