Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
Benji just turned 1 this week. He is 48lbs. This will be his first big snowstorm. Is there anything as first time puppy owners that we need to be aware of?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
at 1 yr old let him go out and enjoy!!! not for hours but he can play. When I brought my dog in from playing in the snow she always went into the laundry room so I can wipe her down. If she was very wet I would use a blow dryer on low to dry her off. She had long fur, as she was a golden, so many time snow and ice would ball up in her fur.
let benji have fun and play in the snow with him. I would make snow angels and my dog would help, she loved it and so did I.
I also made a path and flattened out an area so she can squat to go to the bathroom without an issue

Watch for the salt which can hurt them and check the pads for cracks after.

Re: Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
I am always extra careful to dry off their paws... salt, snow and ice can get caught in between (especially in my lab with web toes).

Re: Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
There is an article on Newsday.com about this today:
1. Clean those paws when you come inside.
Those tiny toes can get ice and snow embedded in them, which can cause irritation. Further, common deicers contain chemicals that, if licked, can result in illness.
Two easy fixes: Rinse and wipe off paws after your pets come back inside and, if you can, have your animal wear protective booties.
2. Prevent frostbite.
Pets should only be outside in cold temperatures for short bursts; otherwise, they can get frostbite. Take your cat or dog to a vet immediately if it shows signs of frostbite, which include shivering and change of color (redness in early stages, white or patchiness as it progresses).
3. Keep those ID tags on.
If your animal accidentally escapes, it may have a tough time finding its way home. Scents are masked by snow and ice, making it easier for your guy or gal to get lost.
4. Don't leave your pet in the car.
Think of how cold your car is when the heat is off. Because a car holds in the cold, an animal could freeze to death.
5. Don't start your car in the garage with a pet nearby.
Carbon monoxide gets trapped quickly, which can be fatal to a small animal in a matter of minutes.
6. Keep away from bodies of water.
If you live near a pond, for instance, a pet could step on thin ice and quickly be in danger.
(I never use Rock Salt. Always kosher salt and some sand).

Re: Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
Thank you all for the great advice. We always dry his paws when he comes in if it's wet outside so he is used to it. So far he seems to like the snow

Re: Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
Our dog is OBSESSED w/ the snow. We go out and play with him - but like the article said not for long periods of time especially if we're gonna get all the snow we're getting. We also don't leave him by himself just in case. Be careful of the salt, etc. Have fun!
My favorite pictures are of him in the snow

As long as you keep the time outside short, let him play. Our dog loves the snow I try to keep it to about 20 minute burst. Also watch the salt on there paws and them trying to eat it. I use a towel and a warm paper towel to clean the paws when we come in. We leave in an apartment though so I have no control over what salt they use on the sidewalks.

Stupid question 1st time puppy mommy
FYI- I let my guy out the back of the house. I have a fenced in yard. I ONLY buy "doggie" snow melt for the back. The ice melt can be really bad for animals, so I buy the special kind made specifically to be "pet friendly". I ALWAYS wipe his paws off when he comes in.
