Converting to gas
The house we're (hopefully!) buying has an older boiler. DH and I were considering converting to gas. What is involved in the process? How long does it take? Can I convert to gas heat and for cooking, or is it a different process? How much does it cost (ballpark?)
TIA!

Converting to gas
Is there a gas line in the street near the house? That will make a huge difference. If there is, you apply to National Grid (Iif I recall, it took a couple of months for the application to be processed and approved) and they will bring the gas line to you house (I think to a maximum of 100 ft). Then you contact a contractor to do the conversion in your house. Yes, you can do heat and gas cooking all at once - but you have to have a stove/oven that operates on gas. We used Burner King about 2 years ago and it was in the $6-$7K range

Converting to gas
First you have to find out if there is gas in the street and if so how close. Also, if the street has been opened in the last 2 years they won't open it again right away. Our neighbors wanted it but needed to wait another year because the town only gives permits every 2 years to open up the same street....not sure if it is like this on all towns but I am sure they are have some sort of restriction so the streets are a mess.
You need to get a contractor on board to sign the application. You can do just cooking, just heat or both. We used Burner King in Oct and they ran the gas for cooking even though we don't have a gas stove and our stove is only a few years old and we were not buying a gas one. They ran the stove line for free since there were there and it wasn't far from the boiler.
We got the top of the line system and it was about $8K. I am so happy with it.

Converting to gas
I've been doing some research on this too since we are looking to purchase soon and may purchase a house with oil. It seems that it depends on how far the gas lines are from the house but most of the research I have done seems like the cost ranges from $7-10K which is $$$. Not sure if we will do it if we happen to purchase the house with oil heating since the oil prices are so low now.
ETA: I'm also curious as to anyone who has knowledge on how much and difficult it is to convert to just gas for cooking.

Its the same process just the cost would be less.

We just did this last June, the process was relatively painless. You have to first make sure there's gas on your street. You can convert to gas heat and hook up a gas stove but know that most plumbers won't run the gas line to your stove unless you already have a gas stove. At our last house we had a plumber come and run the gas line to the stove and then cap it but I believe this is not "to code" and most plumbers won't do it. We met with 3 different companies that came highly recommended and went with the cheapest, I think when all was said and done we paid around $7500.

Converting to gas
We did this in the fall....paid 6k because a friend of a friend is a plumber who does them all the time. We were quoted between 7k-10k from other companies.

Its not that it is not to code its that you can't get a C of O for that permit until the stove is hooked up.

Re: Converting to gas
It only took two days. The conversion cost just shy of $10,000, we needed to line our chimney also which was $1,500. So all told almost 12k.
I will say that our bills are half, maybe even less than what they were.
We also had an old boiler and we were paying $800 a month and our house was COLD. Our bill for 3.5 months was $800 this season!
