Runners - 2 sneaker questions
1) how many miles do you put on your running shoes before you toss them?
2) for those who have orthotics, are you supposed to get the soft part replaced? Mine have been through 3 half marathons and 1 full, so I'm starting to wonder. And if so, where do you get that done?

Re: Runners - 2 sneaker questions
I also stop running in them around 300 miles and demote them to walking shoes. If you have custom orthotics from a podiatrist, they should last at least 2-3 years. If you are seeing wear on them in certain spots, you can ask about getting them resurfaced - the podiatrist can send them out for you. It might cost you $20-$50. If they are over-the-counter orthotics/insoles (I am referring to the insoles you'd buy in a running store like PowerSteps or Superfeet), you probably will need to replace them more often, perhaps after going through 2 rounds of new running sneakers. A good running store like Runner's Edge could answer that better.

Re: Runners - 2 sneaker questions
Thanks for the input. My current sneakers are over 300 (which includes tons of pavement running) so I better break the new ones in before next Sunday's half!
The orthodics are prescription, so I'll give the doc a call re: a refresh.

I wouldn't get new ones before next Sunday's half. They won't be broken in. Mine have tons of miles in them. I usually toss after a marathon but didn't this time and plan to wear them next Su day.

Re: Runners - 2 sneaker questions
If the half is a week from this weekend, I think you'll be fine in new sneakers if they are the same make and model. If they are the right sneakers, you should not have to "break them in". I definitely would run in them a few times, but I think 3 runs is sufficient. In fact, running in sneakers that are too worn out is probably worse. My opinion of course, please do what you are more comfortable with.

Thanks! Yes, they are the exact same make and model, and felt great during my 5 mile run today, so I think I'll wear them.

Re: Runners - 2 sneaker questions
300-500 miles or when the treads are badly worn. Its usually every 6-12 months, just depends if I am training for a race or not.
