Dtap is good for five years so I am not sure why they would tell you to get it three years later? I would talk to your primary care physician. You don't want to over medicate. As for your mil, you are being hypocritical. With that said whooping cough is no joke, but if she is up to date we her vaccinations then she may not need it.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent

I'm a nanny and the family I work for had a new baby in December and my boss asked me to get it since I'm with the baby all the time. When I found out I was pregnant I asked my doctor if I needed it again since I just got it and she said yes because I wasn't pregnant then.

Also, I have every intention of having my husband and my MIL, who will be watching the baby half the week, getting the shot. I don't want to chance anything and I'm sure they'll feel the same.

Re: TDaP booster shot and MIL Vent

Thank you all for your input.
With regard to me being "hypocritical", perhaps I am being so. But i wanted to clarify that I am not against getting the shot for myself, but I am not comfortable getting the shot WHILE i'm pregnant because the benefits/possible side effects for the baby are not proven. This is a very new recommendation from the CDC to vaccinate pregnant women for pertussis, and i'm sorry, but I refuse to let myself and my child be the guinea pig.
The pertussis vaccine has been around for years, and it's benefits are obviously proven for people outside the womb. I will happily vaccinate myself again if that is what they suggest I do, and I have no issues with vaccinating my children according to my pediatrician's recommendations.
I would also like to point out that my OB was not completely convinced himself when offering this to me. He actually said "i'm on the fence, but this is what they recommend". I asked him if it was his wife if he would tell her to get it and he paused and then said yes. That, to me, is NOT a glowing recommendation that i feel compelled to follow. I would rather ask the adults in our life to get a booster shot that poses no risk to them than to start immunizing my baby in utero when I dont know what the risks are. Maybe that's selfish of me, but too bad.

So, Yes, perhaps MIL has her own reasons why THIS particular vaccine is against her own personal beliefs, while other vaccines and medications are not. I suppose that is her choice. But it doesn't make sense to me, and that was where I was coming from with my post.

my ob had me pick it up from Franwin pharmacy in mineola with a prescription and the ob office gave it to me...

even though I was already up to date on it they said its recommended each pregnancy now so some of the stuff passes over to baby to give them protection... I went home googled and got the same answer too..

Just tell her that's fine you can do whatever you want about the booster but if you choose not to get it you will not be allowed around the baby until X number of weeks/months.

She will change her tune!

I was never offered the shot during any of my three pregnancies, nor do I know anyone who was. Must be a northern/New York thing.

I still don't get this whole TDaP thing - my DH went to get it this time around and the doctor strongly advised him against it - because he had it 3 years ago when DD1 was born. He said it's "good" for 5 years. One of the nurses said pretty much the same thing to me when I asked about it after I had delivered.

My children were born 18 months apart. We were all told not to get it again.
