Things nobody will tell you
What are all the things nobody told you, or warned you, about pregnancy and especially labor and delivery?
There's a good chance you will accidentaly pee a little while sneezing. If you're close to due date, you may even think it's your water breaking.
There's also a good chance you will poop during delivery. I didn't, but only bc they gave me an enema before which also surprised the sht out of me..literally.
You will eventually no longer be able to see your crotch or feet for that matter. Which makes peeing in a cup at appointments that much harder bc you cant see what you're doing.
Modesty goes out the window and you will no longer care who sees your crotch or touches your boobs (when trying to nurse).
You may say dh must stay at shoulder level, but that will probably change while you're pushing. He will prob be holding a leg and looking.
Take the stool softener the nurses offer you after delivery.
There's probably so many more....
Back for more. The spray of meds they give you for your, let's say crotch, is awesome. You will have a whole pee routine. Pee, spray bottle, spray meds, new pad. So fun.
The warm sitz bath helps.
You will look 7 months pregnant when you leave the hospital. It's normal and you're belly will go down soon enough.

It hurts If you get an episiotomy, you might not want to sit for a few months Breast feeding hurts. A lot. Like toe curling pain. But only for a few weeks. Then it's so easy!!!!! You will look pregnant leaving the hospital. And for a few weeks after. It hurts. The squirt bottle they give you after is wonderful! If you breast feed, it's normal to feel something in other areas. I'll leave it at that.

Re: Things nobody will tell you
Agree with above! The pain is not like "really really bad period pain". it is the most blinding excruciating pain in your life (I went natural, not by choice and clearly am still traumatized lol).
Someone "warned" me about using a squeeze bottle down there and I didn't get it until after I had the baby, and then I was super thankful for the heads up.
You will be terrified to poop the first time post delivery but take the stool softener and you'll live to tell the tale.
If you tear (badly like I did), it may take a few months before you feel remotely normal down there, but eventually you will feel better.
Two words: urinary incontinence. oy.
Yup, things pretty much no one told me.

Yes modesty goes out the window!
Also I was in a lot of pain after birth with all of the cramping and I also bled a lot which I did not know about
And I also had an episiotomy that did not heal right, I was in pain for a while.. So if the same thing occurs this time around I know to dab peroxide on it so it heals better

Funny how I had two and have blocked some of these memories out.
Dont forget to bring the squeeze bottle home with you. I forgot it.
Apparenlty you can end up needing your gallbladder out a couplr of months after deliveryn
Be prepared hospital may not have private room. Your baby may be in icu and your room mate may have baby in room.
Modesty is gone for asking nurses help on breast feeding. I still wasnt going to expose myself in front of visitors though.

Re: Things nobody will tell you
I'll add that you continue to contract well after the baby is out - like the next few days, and the medical stuff will be pushing on your stomach to check your uterus - not fun.
The afterbirth contractions aren't terrible after your first baby - but way worse after #2, #3 etc... luckily I was warned by the nurse because it hurt!! (I went drug-free though)

Re: Things nobody will tell you
No one told me not to expect things as planned. I ended up having a c-section after not dilating for 19 hours and I had every intention of having a natural birth.
Also, I had no idea how hard breastfeeding would be! That was probably the hardest for me to deal with.
Lastly, my sex drive dipped a ton after giving birth- something I wasn't prepared for.

Things nobody will tell you
1. Everyone warned me about labor and no sleep. No one told me how awful recovery was. My whole body was sore. I was consistently working out my entire pregnancy, but my muscles felt like I had never used them! This is in addition to pelvic pain which I found to be very bad for at least a week.
2. A boppy is not just for breastfeeding. Sit on it if you need to.
3. Breastfeeding can hurt. A LOT! Everyone kept saying at 2, 4, 6 weeks it'd get better. Finally, at 8 weeks, it got better.
4. Lanolin cream for your nipples will stain your clothing.
5. If you have sex at 6 weeks and it is painful, let your dr know. I wound up reopening some of my tear and had to have it cauterized. I also had to massage vitamin e in the area to break up scar tissue.
6. Breastfeeding makes your very dry down there!
7. Do your kegels. 6 sets, 6 times a day for 6 seconds each time!!

After the baby is born, you still have painful contractions until the placenta passes. The nurses will also push on your stomach to make sure everything passes and it's painful.
Chances are you will be stitched up down there

Swelling! After my c-section, my legs looked like balloons and I was freaked out. But if you have a section, you don't get to push out a lot of the fluids and it's gotta go someplace. Gravity will take over. It will go away after a week or so
The word "embarrassed" does not live in the vocabulary of anyone who has ever given birth. By the end, you've had so many hands up your crotch that you won't know the difference between an MD or the cleaning guy

Totally forgot about the swelling after! Omg my ankles and feet became one. I had elephant feet! It's from all the iv fluids I was hooked up to for the epidural. It was actually painful how swollen my ankles/feet were. I had to have them elevated at all times.

Yes, and yes
Also, you might not just pee when you sneeze. You might pee yourself a little or a lot when you cough, laugh, or throw-up!!
Eta. If you have a csection you might start to feel them closing you up because the epidural is turned off make sure to ask for pain meds right away.

Pretty much all of the above. So unbelievably true.
ETA: You might be afraid you're going to poop the table while pushing but when it's actually happening, you won't know and you won't care if you do know because you just want that baby out!
Also take everything that isn't nailed down... diapers, wipes, ointments, peri bottle, dermoplast (MUST!!!), chucks, pads, witch hazel pads, swaddle blankets, etc.

Only thing I have to add is the baby blues. I cried for the first 10 days after both of my deliveries.

I will add hemorrhoids to that list. Dealing with that was more painful at times than labor.

Re: Things nobody will tell you
I wish someone told me that the first time you stand up after a c-section (hours later) the amount blood that literally just falls out is not only instense but completely mortifying. I think whatever dignity/shame I had left went on the floor too.
The one thing I cannot wait for is that amazing, insane, cloud 9 high you get after you have the baby. They should figure out a way to bottle that feeling, it would make so much money!

Things nobody will tell you
How bad it will hurt to laugh or sneeze after a c/s.
How uncomfortable the hospital beds will be.
How many times the nurses and doctors will come into your room during the night to check your vitals just after you've finally fallen asleep.
How painful it will be to remove the surgical tape from your stomach after having your c/s.
Boy, I'm really looking forward to this again

That reminds me... if you're a month early and didn't get the time to "prepare" down there and have a true emergency cs they will not take the time to shave anything first. You will spend the next few weeks with gunk oozing out of your incision and getting stuck in your hair. My very patient, caring doctor spent a good 10 minutes one day trimming gunk out of my hair down there to try to clean up my incision which was not healing great.
There's such a thing as postpartum preeclampsia. I'd never heard of it until my doctor mentioned that I needed to look out for it (thankfully it never got to that point). My bp was pretty high after both of my deliveries so I got to go back to have it checked frequently after discharge which was annoying.
No one warned me with my vaginal delivery that you may have to stop your epi so you can push. I went from feeling nothing all day to feeling everything during delivery as well as being stitched up.
No one warned me that my second deliver could be opposite in every way from my first. From 2 weeks late to a month early, cs instead of vaginal, and going through a serious complication that could have taken DD2 if it wasn't caught in time. I never thought I'd be that one in 5000 chance.

Re: Things nobody will tell you
That the blessed epi that kept you comfy throughout your whole labor may wear off right when you are ready to push. And they won't give you more. And you will feel every inch of the crowning and tearing. And that you will beg dear Jesus for sweet death.
That the first time you poop after a v birth you are going to be terrified of ripping your stitches out! And it will feel almost like giving birth all over again!
That tampons will not fit right for many months after you are allowed to use them again. (I constantly felt like they were going to fall out of me!)
That your first period after giving birth will look like a crime scene and you will most likely think you are bleeding to death...but it's normal
That even after just one baby and a relative easy v-birth, you will leak pee for the rest of your life!
And speaking of pee, that the first time you try to pee after getting giving birth vaginally, it will be soooo hard. It will feel like you have to pee but you just can't. The nurse said this was due to all the contracting in that area and likely the catheter too. Your bladder spasms. I had to have my mom and a nurse in the bathroom with me- splashing cold water on my hands and butt LOL to get me to go! It freaked me out!
That if you see a diaper in your room after giving birth, it may not be for your baby, it may be for them to fill with ice and put on you who-ha!

Re: Things nobody will tell you
The swelling, both before and after delivery. Happening much earlier the second time around.
To go along with that, the veins that pop in your legs. I'm sure there's some technical term but my legs already look black and blue and I've got 4 months to go!
Contractions hurt! A lot. The epidural is nothing in comparison and provided so much relief. At least initially.
Pooping during labor. Realizing it, knowing I can't do anything about it, and just dealing.
The wonderful sense of relief when the baby cries and seeing her/him for the first time.
Episiotimy not fun. Being stitched up on the table, wanting the baby, but not allowed yet while DH gets those first moments.
Hurts so much to pee and poop after giving birth. Using that squirt bottle and those witch hazel pads.
Sex hurts too. Unbelievably so. Maybe I'm not normal but for a long time after birth.
Breastfeeding is incredibly hard. I remember being in the hospital and DD had a good latch but would not stay on the boob long. So worried and stressed out whether the baby was getting enough, I was producing enough, we were doing it right. But it became easier and was so rewarding and fulfilling.
The baby blues. Crying a lot after birth and being home.
To go along with that, not feeling like myself for months afterwards. I've seen posts on here that women were ok a couple of weeks to a month after giving birth. I remember 6 mos later and I still didn't feel like myself.
Yeah, I guess I had a lot!

Re: Things nobody will tell you
I don't think anyone mentioned this. The big shock for me was that once your water breaks (regardless if it's at home or broken in the hospital by the doctor), it's not like it gushes out then that's it. No, it keeps on coming. Every so often I had smaller gushes of fluid and I was often sitting in a puddle in the hospital bed while in labor (the nurses kept changing the pad under me). This really bothered me and I felt SO disgusting. I was so scared that I was going to leak all over the floor when I'd get up to go to the bathroom (before I finally caved and got the epi).

Another thing nobody tells you...your lady parts swell up like nobody's business. And for some (yes, me) they never go back to the way it was before pregnancy. Good times!!!
