I believe I'm going to need a lot of it. I'm a new homeowner and clueless. What do you do? Have the landscaper do it? Have it delivered? Any recommendation? Thanks!

We get it delivered to our driveway and install it ourselves.

Re: Mulch

How much are you paying for delivery and how much are you getting? My landscaper wants $180 to mulch three separate flower beds I have. Not sure if this is a lot or not. My landscaper never overcharges me for service so I am going to think this is in line, especially given it includes the labor.

Also are there any real benefits of having mulch besides the look of not seeing the "dirt"?

I have so many other expenses right now I need to deal with so this is more of a "want" than a "need". Thx.

I do think $180 sounds high just to mulch three flower beds -- my entire spring cleanup of my property (front and backyard, seeding, aerating, power-raking, cleaning out beds, etc.) is $300. Your mulch is more than 1/2 that price. Are these especially large beds?

Mulch

Last year I think we paid almost $400 to have mulch put down but we had alot of area to do. If it was only small flower beds I would just do it myself but we have 4 medium size flower beds in the front and in the back is along the entire fence line, 3 sides so that is way to much work for me lol.

Re: Mulch

In the Town of Islip, I take my pickup truck and head down to the town mulching facility. We can drop off any trees/brush/bushes/etc, and we can have unlimited mulch that they make from the dropped off materials. During the spring, there are always plenty of people getting the free mulch. Lots of sedans with garbage cans in the trunks, plenty of pickup trucks.
I'll be heading over there several times this year myself.

Well I am not sure how big is big. I have a colonial house on a standard 70x100 property. Inbetween my front door I have a bed of landscaping on one side and a bed on the other side. Then on the side of my house next to a walkway leading back to the house I have another long bed. If I had to guess the flower beds are probably 13'x5', another 8x5' since this side has the garage door, and one 25'x5' on the side of the house.

I paid $150 for my spring cleanup which included much of your stuff, plus $60 for seeding/fertilizer.

mulch is the easiest part of cleanup.... it doesnt even take that long. i buy a few bags at home depot then realize it's never enough....

in theory it helps minimize weeds but i only notice it for a little while.

i usually mulch every other year (slacker)

It's a dirty job, but if cost is a concern, then DIY! The mulch was just on sale at home depot last weekend 5 bags for $10, so it is certainly cheaper to DIY. And I don't think it's necessary for flower beds, but it does look nice.

Mulch does prevent weeds as long as it is put on properly, which means deep enough, 2 - 3" thick. It also keeps the soil from drying out so that you don't have to water as much.

I put on my own mulch. I buy it at garden centers, but I can also get some free from my town if I go get it at the dump.
