Permit for fence in Town of Hempstead/Nassau County?

Did you need a permit to put up a new fence? Its only going to be in our backyard (in front of neighbors existing chain link fence) and then a gate across the driveway. The fence salesmen said it wasnt really necessary but just wanted to see what others have done. TIA!

It depends on how high the fence is, how close to street, etc. you can always call and ask what the rules are (without giving your address or personal info), or look at the current code online.

We were told that yes, we technically needed a permit for the work to be done. However, most fence companies will do the work without it. If you happen to get caught, they stop the work until you get the right permit, and then they will complete it. We had a new fence put in, without a permit, no problem. Took one day, and basically as long as your neighbors don't complain, you're fine.

No wonder people dont bother with permits...I just called and was transferred to 5 different people (one being the payroll dept???!?) to ask the cost and no one could tell me. I was finally transferred to someones voicemail so I hung up. We arent looking to sell anytime soon but has anyone run into problems at closing for not having a fence permit?

I think if you're not on a corner you don't really need to worry... we bought a house that is on a corner that had a 6 foot fence. Because its on a corner you technically need a permit to have a 6 foot fence (even though everyone else in the neighborhood has them). It also doesn't go out all the way to the street- my neighbor had this done to give him more yard space and needed a variance. Before we closed we had a stipulation in the contract that the sellers had to get a permit to maintain a 6 foot fence (we def wanted the 6 foot fence for privacy reasons). The fence was falling apart, so we replaced it with a PVC one.
