Stripping Membranes?

Has anyone had this done? I'm due tomorrow (4/28), but nothing seems to be going on. I've been 2cm dilated and 70% effaced since 37 weeks. I have an OB appointment on Wednesday where I'll be 1 day past my due date. Some friends have said their doctor has offered to strip their membranes to get the process going. Some agreed and had it done, and others waited to see if they if they would progress more on their own. Have you had it done? Did it cause you to make progress? How long after you had it did you go into labor? Just looking for info on this I guess. Anything you'd be willing to share would be great! Thanks, ladies!

Stripping Membranes?

How exciting! I had my membranes stripped at 38 weeks. I didn't even know he was gonna do it but I was 2 cm not sure how much effaced. I just felt pressure and a little pain. He wanted me to come back in two days bc he said he thought it was the start of everything. I ended up going into labor the next day and had my son that night!

Stripping Membranes?

I had it done on a Thursday at 9 am and had my son by 5 pm on Friday.

I was in station 0, 60% effaced, and 2-3 cm dilated.

I felt no pain whatsoever - felt exactly like every other internal exam. I had some spotting afterwards.

I had my membranes stripped at on a Thursday and went into labor Sunday afternoon. I was about 80% effaced and barely an inch dilated when he did it.

It was just an uncomfortable feeling. No bad at all. I didn't realize he even did it until after he was done with my internal exam.

Stripping Membranes?

I had mine stripped during my induction just before they broke my water. I can't tell you if it helped or not b/c I was already on day 2 of 3, had already had 2 rounds of cervidil and was on my 2nd round of pitocin. I think I was about 2-3cm. DD was born the following day.

I didn't have mine stripped. Although I went 2 days early, I was mentally prepared to go 2 weeks late, since that's as far as I would be allowed to go. Although I declined all internals, just be aware that you can often stay stagnant in terms of effacement/dilation for quite awhile.

I would probably just ride it out and have a conversation about stripping in another week or so

Totally agree with this...but personally I'm not a fan of rushing childbirth. It'll happen when it's ready to happen unless there's a medical issue.

My dr did it at my appointment at 40w 4d without even telling me he was going to... it was very painful (i was about 1.5cm). After my exam he told me go home, get my stuff and go to the hospital to get induced. by the time I got home, I immediately began bleeding and having contractions and would have had to go to hospital anyway!

I stalled after getting to 3cm, and was induced anyway. DS was in a weird position and heart rate kept dropping and i never got passed 4.5cm. After about 13-14 hours of labor I had to have a c section.

Mine were stripped at on a Friday, 40 weeks around 9PM. Water broke at 2AM Sunday morning. Had LO on Monday around noon but that's a different story all itself.

Stripping Membranes?

Mine were stripped in the hospital to start things along for an induction. It was the absolute worst pain and I wouldn't have it done again..I literally climbed the back of the bed in pain and I swear she was up to her elbow. (This was after 2 natural child births mind you)

Stripping Membranes?

Mine were stripped at 38wks 5days, unbeknownst to me until after my Dr did it. It was a much more painful internal than the others I had so I was like, WTF was that?! And she said "oh, I stripped your membranes," which I didn't even know was a thing and had to look up on the internet after I got home. If I remember correctly, I was like 2-3 cm dilated at the time.

I ended up going into labor about 36 hrs later and had DD less than 3 hrs after labor began, exactly at 39 wks.

Re: Stripping Membranes?

Mine were stripped on a wed & went into labor early Friday morning. It was a little painful. My OB just did it without asking me first. I was pissed because it was 10 days before my due date.

I can't believe some doctors are doing this without telling the patient first! Or even without asking!

Yeah, I have to say that I am shocked to hear this as well, especially for those that had this done BEFORE their due date. Either way, however, I feel that this is a medical procedure and you have the right to 1) be informed of what's being done to your body and 2) decline the procedure. I'd be pissed if this was done without my knowledge and I was nonchalantly told after the fact!

Oh yeah, I had no idea. My internal was slightly more painful than normal. I thought to myself WTF is this? Dr C literally had his arm up there. I mentioned that it was more painful than any of the other internals I had & he never mentioned stripping them. I didn't connect the dots until I arrived to the hospital in labor, Dr Miller checked me & told the nurse that there were no membranes. Then it clicked. Oh, I was pissed.

Re: Stripping Membranes?

I had mine stripped when I was 38 weeks. It was excruciating. I lost my hearing for 15 seconds afterwards just from the shock of the pain. I wish I was joking, but I'm not. I wouldn't have it done again. And it didn't help me go into labor. I had to be induced at 39 weeks due to high BP.
