Swaddle vs. Sleep Sack

Hello,
I was wondering what everyone if having their babies sleep in? Are you swaddling them in a blanket or putting them in a sleep sack where their arms are free? I have registered for both and now I am second guessing the sleep sack. Are the sleep sacks for older babies and the swaddling blanket for newborns?

My dd LOVED to be swaddled until about 7 months, so we used swaddles and woombies until then.
Your DC may not like the swaddle from the start. You never know with each babies individual preferences.

Maybe just get the Halo Sleepsacks with detachable swaddle?

My DD HATED to be swaddled, she was always in a sleep sack. Chat Icon A lightweight one in the warmer months and the fleece one in the winter.

Re: Swaddle vs. Sleep Sack

My DS swaddles for the first couple of weeks but then wasn't a huge fan. Then I used sleep sacks and he loved them.

With this LO I will try swaddling but I have a sleep sack for the fall.

SwaddleMes saved my sanity until about 5 months.

They can break out of the blanket swaddle pretty easily and then they wake up because the movement startles them.

Sleep sacks with arm holes are for when they're too old for swaddles, IMO.

Agreed.

We swaddled DD in a blanket for 5 months b/c she loved it. Then we moved her into sleep sacks.

Re: Swaddle vs. Sleep Sack

DS did not like his arms to be restricted, so we used the SwaddleMe and left his arms out. I found the sleep sacks made it difficult to change him in the middle of the night.

Register for both and see what works for you.

We swaddled with swaddle blankets until DD rolled over on her own at 3 months. We used the sleep sack and now an a&a muslin sleep sack after that till now (she's 14 months). Her arms are out and it operates more as a blanket now.

Swaddle vs. Sleep Sack

We only swaddled DD until Day 4. She's never used a sleep sack. I don't think this is something you can really decide in advance. DD is almost 18 m old and I just returned a sleep sack I had for her to BBB this week. Chat Icon At least they're awesome about returns! My plan for #2 is not to plan and just see what happens. Get a 3 or 4-pack of Aden & Anais swaddler blankets and you'll be ready for lots of situations -- from swaddling to using around the baby's head in a U shape in the car as a nb, to covering the stroller, etc. Amazingly versatile item!!

with my son, we swaddled him for the first 6 weeks when he slept in the RNP and swing.

once we moved him to the crib, we started using the swaddle mes and sleepsacks. he had more room to move around so those kept him more secure.

Re: Swaddle vs. Sleep Sack

I would keep one of each on your registry. My DD loved to be swaddled but hated her arms not being free. So I would swaddle her bottom half with her arms free. And then when she got a little older, I used the sleep sack. The swaddle allows their little feet to be nice and snug, while the sleep sack lets their legs and feet fly free.

Re: Swaddle vs. Sleep Sack

Swaddle blankets and sleep sacks are two different things. The swaddle blanket is used to completely swaddle the baby until they are about 8-12 weeks to help them learn how to sleep and not startle themselves with their newborn reflexes and the sleep sack is to be used instead of a blanket. I know a lot of babies do not like to be swaddled including my son, but I swaddled him anyway and he slept so wonderful in it. I am a strong believer that swaddling gets them in a habit of sleeping longer stretches. At 6 weeks I was gtting 5-7 hour stretches, and by the time my son was 12 weeks he was sleeping through the night. We dropped night feedings and the whole nine. He busted out of the Miracle Blanket when he was about 12 weeks old and form then on he slep in a sleep sack. You should be prepared to have both if you're registering.

i agree. DS absolutely hates being swaddled and broke free of every swaddle we put him in. i got a swaddleme as a gift, and it is awesome. now he can finally sleep for more than 20 minutes without startling himself! the sleepsacks seem to be for when they're a bit older.

My DD HATED the swaddle after about 2 weeks. At day care she naps in a sleep sack and seems to like it!

I used the Halo Sleep Sack Swaddles and loved them - you can use them either way - with their arms out or with them swaddled. My girls definitely slept much better when swaddled.
