Spinoff to Tummy Tuck: How do you know...
How do you know if you could use a tummy tuck, or if you just need to stop eating carbs? (easier said than done!)
Would a plastic surgeon be honest and tell you if he or she thought you could look good with just dieting? Or do they want everyone to become a client?
I've had three C sections, and my stomach is not flat. I'm not sure if a tummy tuck is the answer.

Re: Spinoff to Tummy Tuck: How do you know...
i also thought a tummy tuck was more for loose skin- like no matter how much you diet and exercise it always looks flabby due to the skin being stretched out from pregnancy, weight gain/loss etc

I think you're right. Hmmm.. Not sure my flab is due to stretched out skin...

LOL. I only had one pregnancy, no C section and my stomach was flat 2 weeks later. So I know my little pooch now is due to too many carbs and too much booze! Oh and too little moving my asss! Can't blame it on anything else

Look at the website a poster suggested realself.com. The before and afters give you a good idea. I had two vaginal births and no stretch marks and though a tummy tuck would be nice for the little bit I would like to lose I feel like looking at the pics made me realize it isn't something I need.

This is half right. There are two parts. The first is a rectus repair where they sew the ab muscles back together after they have been separated from pregnancy. Not every women who has been pregnant has this but many do, esp after twins, ect. Google diastasis recti for more info. The second part is the removal of loose skin. I had one after triplets, it was a no brainer and I am thrilled with the results. However it DOES leave a hip to hip scar - most "after" pictures with underwear on do not show this. It's definitely a trade off!

Re: Spinoff to Tummy Tuck: How do you know...
They will tell you. I didn't have much fat, but my muscles were completely separated, my belly button popped out and never went back, and my skin sagged. Like a deflated balloon.
Lipo can be done during tummy tuck, they tend to do it on flanks as part of the tt. I asked for it, but Dr Romanelli said I didn't need it.
I do have a scar, but it is very light and thin, you can hardly see it. Also, every time I get a mammo, the techs say that they cant believe I had a breast reduction, because you really can't see the scars.

yeah this is what my stomach looks like! so I think when I'm done having kids a tummy tuck may be my only chance of wearing a bikini again!

I had consults with 3 different doctors, and all 3 confirmed that I had diastasis recti. All three said my stomach would never flatten and tighten on it's own. My abs were stretched so far apart. Plus I had an umbillical hernia, which needed to be fixed regardless if I had the tummy tuck or not. Situps weren't helping my hernia either.
The hip to hip scar was a trade-off though. My husband is the only person who has really seen it. But I have to very selective on what bikini bottoms I buy so the scar doesn't show (as if buying bathing suits isn't fun enough! LOL). But I'm confidently rocking a bikini at 40 years old with 2 kids, so it's all good.

Re: Spinoff to Tummy Tuck: How do you know...
I think it's most needed when them muscles have been badly stretched out, not only for loose skin.

Re: Spinoff to Tummy Tuck: How do you know...
Wanted to update and say that dr specifically asked if I am near my personal ideal weight. So to answer original question no it is not for weight loss only loose skin. Ideally you should be near your ideal weight already before surgery.

Re: Spinoff to Tummy Tuck: How do you know...
A friend of mine just had it done. She carried three children (her DS and then twin DD's). She is a fitness fanatic, works out daily and still had loose/stretched skin. She just had her tummy tuck and was back to being totally active within a few days. I was in complete shock! They did tell her that she would heal quickly because she is in tip-top shape. So, I would say that no matter how much she worked at it, she was never going to "shape up" her belly (even though I say that we, as women are very hard on ourselves and I think she looked great!).
