Students Copying from Each Other

Hi. I just joined this site. I have a question that I thought some others might be able to answer.

My daughter is in 2nd Grade. She said that the kid who sits next to her has copied off of her on the last test. Should she tell the teacher? Should I? Or, should I just not worry about it because the teacher probably knows already.

Thanks for your insight.

Re: Students Copying from Each Other

A girl accused my son of copying from her. They had completely different answers, and my son's was correct and her answer was wrong. He did not copy from her and she ended getting in trouble. My son was very upset to be wrongly accused. I would not say anything. The teacher will notice and move the children. The girl who accused my son was ostracized by the other kids afterwards. I would not say anything.

Students Copying from Each Other

From working in a school if it happening the teacher probably knows and talked to the student away from the other students. (That would be the right thing to do.) However if your daughter keeps talking about it and it is bothering her or a distraction for her I would e-mail the teacher. I wouldn't accuse the child of cheating, just say your daughter keeps coming home and talking about another child looking at her paper it and you feel it a distraction to her. If she seems fine about it then I say leave it alone.

Actually, I don't think she cares. I only found out about it because a classmate of hers was over for a play date and he said "You know that XXX copies off of you?" She's like "Yeah, I know." LOL

Students Copying from Each Other

Maybe I am the odd one out here but I would send the teacher an email. Nothing accusatory or aggresive but I believe the precedent should be set that cheating is not ok. I would just tell the teacher "Hey I don't want to make a stink or anything but can you please keep an eye out for this". I would then tell my daughter that she should cover her paper and if she feels like it is bothering her she can go and whisper to the teacher. These are the formidable years in education and as she gets older things like cheating, copying other students or submitting non-cited work can cause big trouble. If we parents let it slide when another kid does it to our child, I am afraid our kids would be like well when ____ did it to me, you didn't say anything.. JMHO.

When my son was in first grade his teacher mentioned to me that his whole table was copying off each other and they would deter them from doing it, but no one ever got in trouble for it.

It is considered totally normal she said.

Lots of times its a child's only option. Maybe the teacher has sat them together so that the second child can copy your daughter. Copying can be appropriate for certain assignments. It is not appropriate in testing situations or when a child has been asked to show their own work. But really, iwhen students look at a friends paper because they don't understand a new concept it can actually be beneficial to them. Sometimes the teacher even asks the students to copy from the board. It really depends on when and how the student is copying. For now, I would just let the teacher handle it.

Re: Students Copying from Each Other

When I was in the 2nd grade, my best friend and I had seats next to each other. We had a science test. We had playdates together beforehand and we played/"studied" together from the same books. Well, I was accused of cheating off of her because we sat next to each other and had the same answers- both wrong and right. I never copied her and I don't think she copied me. We just had the same wrong and right ideas about science concepts. Being accused of cheating that day traumatized me for life. and many people cheated off of me, but I never let it bother me. I do my thing and they do theirs. That is what counts.

The OP specifically said the child copied off her child on a TEST. Classwork is one thing. A test? Totally inappropriate, and the teacher should absolutely know.

I can't imagine letting people copy off of me, and shrugging it off. Probably why there are so many dishonest people in this world. No one seems to care about dishonestly anymore. These little kids grow up to be adults. Adults that were never taught that cheating and dishonestly are wrong.

That's what I was thinking. I didn't want her to think it's OK to copy. It turns out, however, that the teacher moved the other kid's seat, so maybe she saw it anyway.

You're right. That's what her child said. If her child interpreted the situation correctly, then the teacher should know.

Re: Students Copying from Each Other

In second grade, unless it is distracting your child from concentrating on tests, I wouldn't say anything. It will become apparent to the teacher soon enough. If it IS distracting or upsetting to your child that is the only thing that would lead me to say something.

Re: Students Copying from Each Other

If it was distracting your child then I might mention it to the teacher in a light hearted way but I most certainly would not contact the mom about it.

If the teacher moved the child's seat, she is aware of the copying and handled it.
