Ok, I'm not that crazy.....thank you! I commute to the city 2 days a week (WAH other 3) so I only need care for 2 days, which might be tough in a center to begin with, never mind the fact that the earliest DH or I (he's also in the city) could get there would be around 6:30. I have no problem paying extra for extended hours, as long as they're offered!
We're also considering hiring a babysitter, but again it would need to be someone who was ok with only 2 days a week. I hadn't really thought of an in home daycare. It's hard because I'm the first of my friends to be pregnant and I know absolutely no one on LI so getting recs, advice, etc is tough.
Where are you located?
My Tutor Time offered a 2 day a week option and the hours were 630 am to 630 pm with no extra fee for "early" drop off or "late" pick up
South shore Nassau. I think the closest Tutor Time to me is Massapequa. It's the opposite direction I need to go in but I have heard good things about Tutor Times.

This is going to be interesting! I need to start looking into Day Care but we have no idea where we will be living when I go back to work--Manhattan or somewhere in Queens. We both work in Manhattan and both work until about 7 or 8pm so someone is going to have to change their schedule drastically. I would have thought most day cares had after hours options!
The daycares in Queens seem to be open a little later than LI, which makes me laugh because you can get to Queens from the city much faster than you can get to LI!

Unless you can work flex time, your best bet will be a nanny. Or day care + a babysitter. I have never heard of any day care staying open until 8:30!
Yep, we've thought about the day care + babysitter route, though hoping we could find a day care that has longer hours. I don't go to the office until 9:30 or so though so maybe adjusting my hours is feasible. Unfortunately my industry starts later in the morning and goes later in the eve!

That's good to know! I work near Grand Central and if we are in Astoria, it should be a 30 minute train ride at the most but I will have to account for subway issues. That's annoying about LI hours though.

I thought the same when we were checking out daycares. We leave early so even the 7am drop off is cutting it close. And any time before 8 am is considered early drop off. I am able to pick up at 4pm but I can see how picking up by 6pm is tough for a lot of parents, especially if you work in the city. I'm also in south shore Nassau and part time day care is tough. I was told they can't just save a spot in one class for someone who only 2 days a week unless they could fill the other 3 days. It's a staffing/cost issue. I know you said you are working from home, but you may need care for those days as well once your DC is older and mobile.

Part time daycare is very possible. I used to alternate between 2 days some weeks and 3 days other weeks, and never the same days week to week. It was all over the map since DH was a cop on a rotating schedule. And this was an infant no less.
And 630 am to 630 pm hours...and no early drop off fees.
All I can say is Tutor Time was amazing....

Definitely look around. I'm sure some place will work out. It is definitely a tough search! I focused my search to relatively narrow area around Merrick and Bellmore. Ultimately I needed full time but inquired about part time if my situation changed. I know at my center they aren't too friendly towards it, but I think some of the others allow it if it works for them.

Thanks! I'm in the same area and I feel like it's horribly inconvenient if you work in the city. And so many people here do- I have the pleasure of taking the train with them

Thanks! I'm in the same area and I feel like it's horribly inconvenient if you work in the city. And so many people here do- I have the pleasure of taking the train with them
lol. One reason we like our daycare is that they are right by the train station. My DH hops on the train after dropping DS off. Granted my DH complains he used to be able to take an earlier train and parking gets harder the later you go. Sucks either way. But next year we are switching him to more of a preschool setting. Still close by, but not literally right by the train.
