Hosting a holiday...
What does it entail?
Are you just supplying the space for.everyone.to gather. Or is it all you, soup to nuts? Some people will.supply desserts, wine, etc
Thoughts?

I guess it depends. No real set method.
I think it's expected and of good etiquette to always bring something as a guest (although some hosts dislike when others bring duplicate dishes or desserts. If that's stated, bringing wine, a house plant, a candle.. All a nice touch)
Whenever I've hosted, it was me doing it all soup to nuts. Some brought beer or wine, or a dessert.. But it was of their own doing.
Some families do pot luck. Some co host. Like my mom and I may each make a few dishes, so it's not just one of us stuck with allllllll the cooking.
I love hosting. Haven't had a chance to do it in awhile though.

Hosting a holiday...
We host Christmas but it's all family and its a joint effort. We make some, my mom and MIL makes some, BIL brings wine, etc. Works for our family. I personally don't like to cook and would never want to make it all. . . It wouldn't taste very good and it would ruin my holiday. We have the space and this way both sides get to see our kids without us schlepping all over the place.

We usually provide the main dishes, sides, appetizers and drinks. If people ask if they can bring something I always ask them to bring a dessert.

We host Christmas and plan and provide the entire meal (appetizers and drinks included). Most guests will ask what they can bring and I usually tell them a dessert but I also make sure to have a couple of desserts that I make or buy.
My brother and SIL do Christmas Eve and they provide most of the food (main and desserts) but everyone brings something. We bring lasagna and some of my SILs family brings some other main dishes (she has a huge family) or dessert

When I host I plan everything soup to nuts but if someone asks what they can bring I'm not shy about letting them know what I need. I figure they won't ask if they really don't want to bring something. Usually it's something simple they can pick up at the store like a dessert or wine.

We host lots of bbqs with friends all year. We always supply all the main foods. Our friends will usually bring chips it sides/salads, and always beer. We're a big drinking crowd and it would be insanely expensive for DH and I to supply all the alcohol. We spend about $200 on every BBQ.
We host bday parties for our kids for the immediate family- 14 people. We supply everything- dinner, drinks, dessert. It usually runs us about $250-300 each bday.
Our big holiday is Thanksgiving. We do all the big stuff. Our families each bring a side or dessert. We spend in the neighborhood of $500 each year.

The meat we served was very expensive but even without that we would have spent $400

I supply all the main food. We do a mix of catered and cooked food.

We supply enough food and drinks so that even if everyone showed up empty-handed, they'd still have enough to eat and drink. However, people always do bring food and drinks with them, so we have plenty.

Soup to nuts. The only person I've ever asked to bring something is my mom and even that is only if I'm in a bind. When people ask what to bring I always say just themselves. I never want to make anyone feel obligated to bring something to my house.
I usually end up getting beer and/or wine and it is always appreciated.

I host New Years- I provide everything including alcohol. Everyone always asks what they can bring and I tell them don't feel obligated to bring anything. For the most part people always bring SOMETHING and it is much appreciated

In my opinion, it is everything! top to bottom. all drinks, apps, main dishes & side dishes, desserts, etc. I believe in setting the table nice, etc.
But from what I have been learning lately, mostly from my in-laws is that idea is not the norm. A lot of people invite you over for the holidays but then expect you to cook some of the food and help do the setting up, etc as well.

We hosted this year and supplied everything (food, drinks) but some people brought over wine and more desserts. My mil always makes Christmas cookies and brings them every year no matter who hosts.

Thanksgiving - we host every other year. 10 people. We supply everything, people bring dessert and sometimes alcohol.
Christmas Eve -we host every other year, 35 to 40 people, it's potluck for apps, entrees and dessert.
Christmas -8 people, same as Thanksgiving

We host Christmas Day every year. I supply everything, food, beer, wine. If anyone asks what to bring I usually say a dessert so I do not have to worry about that part of the meal. I usually put out my own baked cookies along with what everyone brings.

We usually do everything, from apps to alcohol, but usually people will bring something anyway as a gesture, a dessert, bottle of wine, etc.

This year I hosted Christmas Eve. My family brought over some apps and dessert but even if they hadn't we would have had more than enough food for everyone. Generally I would expect to do most of the work as a host but when it's family, they always bring things over to help me out.

When I host Christmas it's me doing everything soup to nuts. I plan the menu, decorate, set the tables, provide all the food and drinks, and do all the clean up. Usually everyone offers to bring a little something (a bottle of wine, a dessert, or an app). Those things are in addition to what I cook/provide. I never rely on what a guest offers to bring.

When I host I pretty much do everything from start to finish. I will make appetizers, a main meal, and have desserts. I will also make sure there is soda, water, beer, and wine. I don't go crazy with liquor and stuff like that because I don't normally keep that in my house - not a big drinker - so when I have a party I offer the standards.
A lot of times people will ask me ahead of time what to bring. I always say you don't need to bring anything but if they insist I just suggest whatever they enjoy drinking or a dessert. Sometimes an appetizer.
Some people won't ask and will just bring something - which is great too. Anything is appreciated but I don't expect any of it and I usually do A to Z on my own when hosting.
