referred to a hematologist :(

About 4 weeks ago (when I was 27 weeks or so) when I did my glucose test, I came back with low iron. They put me on Slow FE twice a day on top of my regular prenatals.

I just had my blood retested and with taking the Slow FE twice a day my numbers are still going down! I now have to see a hematologist.

Has this happened to anyone? I am wondering what the hematologist will do. A different iron medication? Or will I have to do IV medication?

I would be curious to hear from anyone that has been through anything similar.

Thanks!

Re: referred to a hematologist :(

I saw a hemotologist when I was pregnant. But much later like 36-37 weeks because my OBs office was terrible at telling me findings. I found out I had very low iron. The hemotologist sent me for a blood transfusion and I had to go in for IV iron 2x a week until I delivered.

ETA: I don't know who you referred to or where you are located but I saw Dr. Rubin at Progressive Oncology/Hematology, in Bayshore. She was great and so was her staff.

I was referred to North Shore Oncology/Hematology.

Do you happen to know how low your iron was that you needed the transfusion?

And if you don't mind me asking, did you have any complications during labor because of the low iron?

Thanks!

Re: referred to a hematologist :(

I don't remember the exact number, but it was low enough for the hematologist to tell me I needed to get one asap. She wanted to send me that day but it was already late in the day and would have to stay at the hospital all night. I went early the next morning.

I didn't have any complications, I had an unplanned c-section. I made sure to let the nurse taking down all my info when I got to the hospital that my iron levels were low and had a blood transfusion. Then they were able to make sure they had pints of blood ready just in case.

I went to this office too. Not for iron though. I had multiple blood clots. The office was great. I still go see them once year for checks.

I was anemic before my c-section with a hematocrit of around 20. However, since I was asymptomatic and feeling fine, they didn't feel the need to do a transfusion.

My sister always feels terrible towards the end of her pregnancy so she always gets a transfusion around 30 - 32 weeks. She usually registers a hematocrit of 18.
