OT as a related service
Is it possible to have OT as a related service? My daughter will be entering kindergarten next year. She currently has a SEIT, PT and OT. Her teacher is recommending an ICT class. Both the SEIT and Physical therapist feel that she no longer will need those services next year. That just leaves OT. I am hearing that you can not get OT as a related service in a general ed class. They are saying that she would need a diagnosis in order to get into ICT to continue the OT services.
I want to know if a diagnosis is really necessary. I would be happy if she was in a general ed class with OT services.
I have the meeting tomorrow and if anyone know of any documentation that could support my needs please share.

OT as a related service
You do not need an official diagnosis to receive services and you absolutely can get OT services while in a general ed class. With that said, if her teacher is recommending an ICT class, then I'm not sure where the mainstream class comes into play?
My son had no official diagnosis from age 2-8 and received OT, PT, speech, etc. etc. His services were based on his needs, and he was classified as "multiply disabled".

My son is going into an ICT class next year for kindergarten. He is not general ed. That being said he is continuing speech and OT (both which he receives now). You definitely do not need a diagnosis, just reports showing they are weak in whatever areas (in my son's case, he did not need PT and his speech was reduced to 2x a week from 3 now, his OT will continue at 2x). This was all based on the recommendations from the therapists.

Our school district will not give OT unless the student has a classification. I think it really depends on the district

I'm an OT and work for a school district. OT and PT are not stand alone services on an IEP at the school aged level. In order to get an IEP a student must fit one of I think 13 or 14 classifications that impact academic functioning. Some districts will give short term OT services at the building level (not through special Ed) but they don't *have to*. You can find out if you district gives OT for non classified student by calling the building principal. That being said, If your child is being recommended for the ICT class They most likely will be a classified student with an IEP. All of this will be discussed at the transition meeting (transition from CPSE to CSE).

A child doesn't *need* a medical diagnosis but must have an educational classification. Somethimes it's easier to get the educational classification with a documented medical diagnosis which explains what's getting in the way of a child having difficulty in school (ADHD, CP...). By law a district does not have to provide OT or PT if the student does not have an IEP (classified student) or a 504 plan (medical).

You can get OT services in gen ed. My son receives of and is in general education. He gets it through a 504 plan. At first they tried to tell me he doesn't qualify because his grades were so good. I told them that is BS.
