Spinoff - Getting a house ready to sell... How do you choose a realtor???

So, we bought our first and only house as a foreclosure that we just stumbled upon while driving through a neighborhood one day. We had no real estate agent, lol. Which means, I've never dealt with one before.

How do you go about finding and choosing a real estate agent? Do you interview them? Do they interview you? What should you look for when choosing a real estate agent? We are in Suffolk county and I don't know anyone who has bought/sold recently to even ask them for recs. I just feel so anxious, cold calling a real estate agent to say I'm thinking about selling my house... want to meet? I have serious phone anxiety (Yes. It's weird. I know... Chat Icon )

Why can't they have a Match.com for people looking to meet real estate agents? Chat Icon

Spinoff - Getting a house ready to sell... How do you choose a realtor???

Communication is most important to me regarding selecting a Realtor. I haven't sold in NY in a while but in FL I picked a realtor that went out of her way to spend time with me and answer all my questions. She wasn't necessarily one of the "top producing" realtors in her office that had a huge army of people working for her in her office. If anything she was probably one of the "rookies".

But with her communication is solid and I knew from the start she knew her stuff. She answers my questions almost immediately via email. I know that when there are house showings, it's HER that is doing the showing and not somebody from "her team" (that's very important to me). She always gives me top attention and I know she does the same with other realtors. The last thing I need is for another realtor to show interest in something and she lolli-gags responding.

Since then she closed on a house that I got a great deal on, and she is has rented my house out for a few different seasons for super top dollar... mainly for the same reasons I stated above (professional, gets back to me and other realtors quickly, easy to work with, etc.)

If I am going to buy/sell in NY again, these are the qualities I look for.

I agree with this. Communication, knowledge (which doesn't always equate to experience, but can be the ability and willingness to track down answers as necessary), and attention to detail are key. You want someone who can be a good "project manager" for you, to guide you through the entire process. It's not just about marketing and finding the buyer, either. There are a lot of other steps in the process, even once you do find the buyer (home inspection, appraisals, title and C/O issues) that a good agent will help you navigate.

Where is your home? I would be happy to consult with you about your needs. I've represented a lot of LI Families members in real estate transactions (you can search the boards for some reviews) or check out my Facebook page - Christine Braun Real Estate. I've been a full-time realtor for 6 years, and prior to that, I was a corporate litigation attorney, so I have a lot of experience with negotiating and client counseling.

Good luck with your sale!

I recommend Christine ^^^. She is wonderful and I worked with her to sell my house.

She is very attentive, patient, knowledgeable, and responsive. I don't think I would have made it through the process without her.

if we ever sell another house, I will be contacting Christine!

I haven't sold my house but I also recommend Christine... when I was thinking about refinancing but wasn't sure if my appraisal would come up to a certain level where it needed to be, she provided me with comps in the area to help me make a decision. I don't think any other realtor would go out of their way to do that.

I found a few in my area and interviewed them. I cold-called lol. We knew we wanted to coordinate our sale and purchase, so we wanted someone with experience. I also wanted to ask about their commission, because that is paid from the proceeds. And I wanted to work with someone I thought would listen to us and help us find what we were looking for.
