Yeah, take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic for future oil changes or maintenance...you will not void warranty, just keep your receipts of work done....$1800 for brakes is crazy!!

The yearly or number of miles maintenance plans are always a joke.
They just look at everything, it doesn't even include replacement. If something major is found you'll be sure they will charge you more to fix it. If they actually find something or need to fix then they say you need a 'tune-up' and that is different.

I've had my car 120,000 miles (8 years) and I've NEVER had one of the maintenance items they suggest. Still going strong. I did need brakes recently and it was 900 dollars (not at a dealer) but I needed a lot more than brakes. Rotors ground down, front and rear brake pads, struts, etc. That to me is to be expected; they have a limit to them so they will need to be replaced. Not 600 bucks for them to glance at fluids. No thanks.

Is it a german car? Brakes and rotors on my Audi are about $700-800 each for front/back.

OMG...that is what we were quoted. I just had my DH's friend who is a mechanic do it on the side.

I hate going to the dealer for anything. I went for their oil change special, supposed to be done in 45 min while I waited. After hours of waiting there, they called me back and showed me all the work that still needed to be done, $800 worth of flushing and refilling stuff and I said no. They acted surprised I didn't agree Chat Icon

I don't even take their free oil changes now. Too much hassle to go all the way to the dealer, too much time wasted there.

Re: car maintenance

My hubby is a mechanic and he says to never ever go to dealerships. First off, they nickel and dime you. They take advantage of most women because they usually go along with whatever the mechanic says.

Oil change should cost no more than 75. Tune up, fluid's, etc- under 150. Brakes? Can cost up to 500. They used to cut rotors but now they change them out. The part pricing may be higher bc you have a Range but still, if you were to purchase your own parts, it would be WAY cheaper and then you could bring to a mechanic to do and pay labor.

One time I needed to get my car inspected. I went to a gas station. They said I needed an oil change. I said impossible- my hubby's is my mechanic and it was changed last week. They looked at me and were mortified.

This reminds me of the horror of Jiffy Lube. Before I was married, I would go there for oil changes. What scammers! Especially to women.
The guy told me I needed a new air filter. He wanted to charge $75 for it. I said, no thanks I'll go to Pep Boys and change it myself. It costs $6.
He was taken aback.

One time my dad was suspicious of them so he marked his oil filter. When he went in for an oil change they claimed to have changed the filter but when he left he saw the same filter that he had marked was still in his car.
He went back and made a stink.

He also witnessed another guy there who had paid a lot extra for synthetic oil but when he checked it after he could tell it was not synthetic and they lied.

There have been stories of them using old oil in people's cars. Horrible.

I take my car both to the dealership and our local mechanic.

I find the pricing for things to be similar but, the dealership often times tries to upsell - especially fluids.

Everytime now that they suggest I need a certain fluid changed I say - "Didn't I just get that done?" and they check it and usually say yes, you don't need that...

It's definitely good to shop around. I was told I needed an expensive item recently from Honda and DH took it to our local mechanic to double check. It came in around the same price in the end and was needed. I would think though for a car like a Range Rover - general repairs and maintenance may cost more than they do for a lower end car like my Pilot.

I had a horrible experience with Jiffy as well. There is one near my house and it was winter- DH did not want to do an oil change in the cold. So we went. They tried pulling some BS saying we needed to upgrade the filter to a more expensive one. DH immediately shot them down and explained to them it wasn't needed and the guy didn't even argue. I have heard stories about them not changing filters and using old oil. Just horrible!

I have a german car (BMW) and the dealers charge a lot. The $600 is not just the oil change (which in and of it self can be between 75-100) but also probably to rotate and balance the tires and the cost of the mechanic to check out the vehicle. Local garages will do whatever tasks are needed and then usually change a little extra to give the car a once over.

If you take your car to a mechanic make sure they are comfortable with your brand of car if it's a luxury import. My mechanic actually owned my car for a while so i trust him (and I've seen other luxury cars in for repair). Most mechanics are comfortable with the standard japanese and american cars but if you have an import, esp a less common one (like a range rover) you should seek out a comfortable mechanic.

Also know that the parts for these cars are where they get you. Sometimes refurbirshed parts are hard to find so they need to order the part direct from the manufacturer which costs $$

Re: car maintenance

This exact thing happened to me!! I had a little Lexus IS250 and dropped it off at the dealership for a routine oil change. Hundreds of dollars later.........they inform me that it was a whole maintenance package. To me honest, I think they were trying to pull one over on me assuming I was a dumb girl. Well, hate to say it but, it worked Chat Icon buttttt I never went back there again for anything service related and we also complained about it.

I understand parts and labor are xpensive but 1800? My
Mils partner owns a race car body shop and he couldn't stop laughing when I told him. I will have one of his guys check it out one of these days to tell me if I need brakes. They don't even squeal. Turns out I have 17000 miles. I bought it with 3k and have had it 2 yrs, 7 months. So 14k miles in almost 3 yrs and I need breaks? Riiiiightttttt

Ugh I hate car dealerships. DH and I are sitting at Honda right now with our civic and CRV. Came in for 2 oil changes. We are not getting breaks and transmission service on the civic. Shoot me. For everything is like $500. I can't...

Re: car maintenance

Since I started working full time and my job is in NJ and i live in Pa, its a 23 mile drive to work each way. with school pickup / drop off, I drive 52 miles a day. I have an 05 matrix. Never in a thousand F**king years would I pay $600 for an oil change / maitenance and $1800 for breaks. Jesus christ..these guys should be investigated b/c that honestly sounds like some shady shit going on over there.

IM sorry you have to pay that, but going forward bring it anywhere else but the dealer and save all receipts.

Some mechanics when they see a woman walk in think they know shit about cars. I used to work on the family car with my dad growing up. I know a thing or two. Sucks they took advantage of you.

I have a luxury car but mine is about 10 years old. I pay about $200 for all the fluids to be topped off and maintenance. Recently I need brakes too it was about $1500 bc I need the rotors done etc. I only drive to the train as well but cannot remember last time I had brakes done.

I recently went to a local place to get something else done, my suspension. It came out to $800. I found that where i saved the most was on labor. They dont charge $100 an hour like the dealership. Chat Icon

Ditto, this is why I don't drive luxury cars. The more $ your car costs, some dealers/mechanics look at you as if you have $$ to burn and charge accordingly. DH does all the oil changes on our 3 cars (all 2012 and older model cars, we don't believe in leasing/finance - I view cars as a way to get from Point A to Point B, not a status symbol). I refuse to go to a dealership for anything unless I have no choice.

I get my oil changed at Walmart...yup Walmart. Cheap and efficient. You can stand right there and watch them do the work in the window, no pit like Jiffy Lube, and no schleping to a dealer and waiting hours and paying $$$$$$. Cost me $30 and that's with a special filter!

DH used to work for a couple of car dealerships. He says that's what they would charge for high performance cars, like a ferrari etc..
