Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm a physical therapist; as soon as someone hears that I get "oh I need a back massage". Massage is about .01% of what I do. Quite frankly the line is a bore already.

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm a teacher. I don't think most people understand what teaching today is like, but it doesn't really bother me.
I will say that I thoroughly enjoy many of the stereotypes/perks: summers off, vacations, early release, etc. I used to do a lot of planning during those times, but now I get to enjoy time with my son, which to me is priceless.

Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
Yes, similar to that of teachers who already responded.....
We make too much money for how "little" we work (summers off, all major holidays off, done by 3PM). The thought that we do nothing or very little when the school day is over and that we take no work home with us is infuriating -- the amount of time spent lesson planning, grading, responding to e-mails, providing documentation for observations, etc. is tremendous. My uncle, who lives in the district I teach in, often makes annoying comments during family gatherings about how his ridiculous out of control LI taxes are going towards my salary. You're house has the value it does in large part due to the public schools in that area. Shut up.

Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I work for a car dealership... No I am not a sleezy salesperson. And no not all salespeople are looking to take your head off. Most of the guys here are really decent guys and rarely make any money off the actual sale of the car..

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
yeah a bit. Besides the usual, you're a girl bit..
Oh you don't want to pay claims You try to decline claims Fraud is acceptable - Everyone does it Insurance is ok if I don't pay my deductible You don't care about us anyway You are only in it for the money Can you insure my house Can you call my doctor ACA makes total sense ACA is a rip off Insurance is a rip off
Yeah I'm an insurance agent Commercial Lines P&C I can handle just about any type of business and business size from start up to fortune 500, non-profit to for-profit. BOP to Medical Mal and Legal Liability.
I have held the Life & Health License in NY and yes I did claims but again for Commercial only. Specializing in litigation, automobile and property claims.
For the most part, it's just frustrating because no one wants to actually listen. You'd be surprised how many people will hand me personal and private information and say "read this and explain" and when I do they get annoyed because its not what they want to hear. Insurance is just so many levels of gray.
We are hated right up there with attorneys and accountants. meh.
I've worked with some great people in my career who've supported me and acknowledged my level of experience and knowledge. It's rare but sometimes I've been forced to show up and show out what I know. Sometimes I get questioned and in those times I've been lucky to have Men or those with power simply respond to the question with "She's right, listen to her, she knows what she's talking about" But that's at work. In day to day I just give up trying to explain.
As I told my dad.. I am a pillow. I get beat up from both sides and I'm expected to fluff out in between.

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm an attorney. The stereotype bothers me a little bit but what is worse is the idea of what an attorney should be like. Attorneys see each other in action and it's better to hire one who has the respect of the judges and other members of the bar than one who is a "bulldog." A good attorney won't take much crap but that doesn't mean they should be a jerk. Just look on this board and there are people looking for "nasty" attorneys every day.
The stories I can tell are insane. I had a friend who hired an attorney BECAUSE the attorney had a discipline history and my friend hoped that a "crooked" attorney would do anything to get get more money on a case. Well, the attorney dropped the ball and the case was dismissed. This is not just sour grapes, as I would not have taken this particular case. I was hoping to help my friend avoid a problem I'm glad I had nothing to do with the case.

Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm a librarian. The cardigan/cat lady stereotype is more amusing. I'm more bothered by the fact that people feel libraries/librarians aren't important. Especially since a few school district around here have done away with certified librarians at the elementary level (because they aren't mandated).

Law Enforcement - where do i even start? I made a lot more money doing Graphic Design...got into law enforcement after personal experiences when I worked 2 blocks fron the WTC on 9/11. I do it because I want to help people, keep our country safe from terrorism, and make a difference. I take that responsibility seriously and know it could cost me my life someday.

Really? That's so upsetting to hear! My kids are not school age yet.
I have such fond memories of my elementary school librarian! She really had such an impact on me and fostered my love of reading. She used to put books aside for me, talk about books with me, etc. Sad to hear that other kids will not get this opportunity.

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I'm a real estate agent (obviously), and a lot of people think we are sleazy, pushy, anything-to-make a sale type people. That is not me at all. I genuinely care about my clients and try to counsel them through the process in a way that is very mindful of their best interests. I just hate that people are so mistrustful of real estate agents and think a lot of us are unethical.
I'm also an attorney (I practiced law for almost 9 years before I switched into real estate sales). I have more of a sense of humor about lawyer jokes. I think I do fit some lawyer stereotypes.
I think I got a lot more respect as an attorney. People assume that you know what you are doing. With real estate, everyone thinks they know your job.
But I'm happier as a real estate agent, and at the end of the day, that's what matters!

Re: Ever get annoyed by your profession's stereotype?
I teach children with autism. I have a class of 6 students.
Everyone always says you have summers off. Nope. I work 6 weeks in the summer full days. It does usually work out to a 2.5 week break but not an entire summer
You only have 6 kids how hard could it be? I love what I do and would not change it for the world but It is a lot of work. A lot of blood, sweat, happy and sad tears.
You get to leave at 3. On Friday I left at 6. Why?! Because I wanted to make sure that my students devices were all ready to go for Monday.
My students learn real skills each day. I am not a babysitter. It used to annoy me so when the mayor would go on TV and say I am sorry the teachers can't get to school.
I also want to say I spend all of my own money. We do not get supplies at school. The school we share our main office saw I got an Amazon delivery the other day and said is that my tax dollars at work??? I almost wanted to jump over the desk. I paid for the chips.
Sorry rant over. It really bothers me me when people don't realize how hard teachers as well as do many other people in multiple professions work.
