Merrick is closed, which means no daycare tomorrow. And I have to go to work. Great. Is anyone actually off tomorrow besides LI teachers? Obviously city teachers are not. What are parents supposed to do with their kids?

I want to know why the freaking city can look like it never snowed and LI can't even plow the main roads. Does TOH have plows? Seriously, do they own plows? I have never seen one, in almost 4 years. My mom called to tell me that her street in Queens has been plowed SEVEN times. They live on a 1 way street in Middle Village that no one drives down.

Your daycare goes by the school district? That sucks!!
Mine rarely closed. It would have to be really bad for them to close. And never 2 days in a row.

They don't close for school breaks (we wouldn't have sent her there if they did) but apparently they follow the school closings. I think a lot of the parents might be teachers, which is fine but it would be helpful if maybe they just had a room or 2 open for the parents who had no choice, kwim? There are definitely other non-teacher parents who send their kids there.

Also, DH worked from home today and moved meetings to tomorrow, which are now videoconferences cause he has to stay home. Last time he worked from home with her she told the guy he was skyping with that she pooped.

So happy NYC isn't off tomorrow! My day care goes by the NYC school closures and I had to put my son in backup day care today, neither of us could take off!

I’d find a new daycare. Most will not follow the district at all because they cater to the working parent. Mine was never closed and all the ones near me were the same.

ITA.

The first year we sent DS they followed the district calendar but, then the started offering care for school aged children and they have barely closed since (they were even open yesterday).

Yep, just got the call from Sachem.
No school again tomorrow.

I am worried too because how many snow days do we have built in? It's only early Jan and 2 are gone.
I hate to have to give up days during nice weather breaks.

God I fuking hate winter.

We get 3... once the 4th one is taken, we get the Friday before Memorial Day taken away... and then they start taking days off the Easter break. I have a planned vacation so my dd won’t be going even if school is in session.

And I agree, I hate winter as well... nothing good comes from it.

Re: news 7 just said schools are open tomorrow

So DH went to the gym early this morning and just got back saying the roads are fine.
I really don't think they needed the second snow day but that seems to be the norm lately.
One snow day always seems to turn into 2.
It's like a given

My road and cross street were well maintained all day yesterday even. I do wonder if the cold was part of the decision. The wind chill today is supposed to be -12.Chat Icon Imagine waiting for a delayed school bus or walking home in that.

Some buffalo area districts closed today bc of expected wind chills of -20 to -30.

I agree, I think some of the reason schools are closed is because of the dangerous windchill. Between children that walk to school and children that wait for the bus it just isn’t safe this morning to be outside.

Maybe. But sometimes we can have cold snaps with terrible wind chills that go on for days. I can't imagine closing school for a week because of wind chills. But who knows.
I just hope this doesn't affect the spring break. I'd rather be off when we aren't cooped up in the house at each other's throats all day!

I am out in Suffolk but I can tell you, although my neighborhood has been plowed many times the side streets are still icy and for the safety of the buses and the kids, they made the right call closing today too. Plus, being on the north shore it's also hilly so it's more of a hazard to get these buses to the kids safely.

Honestly, I use to teach in the city and the general feeling is they don't really give a crap about anyone's safety, they just want to be open so I am not surprised they didn't close today despite all the snow.

I had no issues going to work or dropping my kids off to 2 separate schools. We bundled up and left a few minutes earlier. I warmed up my car. Drive slow. We are lucky that both schools are within half a mile. I am the only one in my dept not working from home and in my office. But I only have a 10 min drive.

I park on the street and shoveled my car 2x after we got plowed in but we figured it out. I also leash walk my dog! My DDs complained all last night why do they have to go to school. Social media is a terrible influence and takes control away from parenting cause they see all the dialogue there. Then DD text me from school that no teachers are there and she hates me. Told them to "suck it up butter cup"!

I think part of the decision is that they have to have the buildings ready by 6:30am for high school teachers and students, and it was still snowing last night...it would be hard to get the buildings ready in the dark, especially because if the buildings and grounds people worked yesterday clearing, they would have to pay them overtime to work last night too. And also the bus companies are a huge influence in opening or closing. The timing of the storm was crummy but I think they made the decision that they felt was safest for everyone.

Re: news 7 just said schools are open tomorrow

Last night I did a little eye roll when my district decided to close but after getting on the road this morning I take it back.

I’m in Central Nassau and the roads near me are terrible. The plow only came through once straight down the middle of the street so each side of the road has about seven extra fee to shovel between the end of their driveway and where the plow went through.

I saw more than one car get stuck trying to turn

It’s bad.

LI for whatever reason is just not equipped to deal with snow. You pay the highest taxes and the municipalities can not clear the roads effectively. Part of the reason is that many places (at least in Nassau) allow on street parking during snow storms. I think during snow storms they need to require alternate side of the street parking so they can adequately clear the roads. I live upstate in a very suburban area similar to LI and from Nov-April, you can not park on the roads overnight. Cities near me (Albany, Troy, Schenectady) issue snow emergencies and require people to follow alternate side of the street parking for two nights. It snowed probably 4 inches here last night and there was literally NO snow on any roads when I went to the gym at 5 am. We had a delay today since the wind chills here made it feel like -25. I am happy we didn't close since we have already used two of our 4 snow days.

Usually that is us, but surprisingly they did a great job by me. The plows were coming through from early morning on and came by several times to keep up with it.
DH said the roads were great when he went out at 630 this morning.
It's surprising actually because usually we are a mess

Interesting that you haven't been plowed in Merrick. I am also town of Hempstead and the plow came through many times. My street is pretty good. The fact that the daycare closed today is odd. I could see it yesterday, but not today.

So I would like to issue a public apology to TOH. The roads were perfect this morning. I got to work in 15 mins.

That being said, there was zero reason to close anything today. And by anything, I mean Daycare.

I just took the kids to school - our roads have been better than this and school has closed so I was surprised (and thankful) that they were open.

It's chilly but, luckily we got there at a time where the wind wasn't blowing so it wasn't much more miserable than it has been.

Or more miserable than I would've been if my kids were stuck home another day... After a long break and before a weekend.

Why? Schools are heated. Are there other reasons temps make a difference?

I wonder what stats are of people getting sick because of walking or waiting for a bus though. Im just wondering the actual risk based on facts.
