First Graders- what books are they reading?

Just curious. My son turned 7 in november, so he's an "older" first grader (one of the oldest in his class). He seems to be doing well with his reading, teacher hasn't brought up anything. BUT i see some friends who's kids the same age are reading like early chapter books on their own, and we're still doing mostly still the "kids" books with pictures (like the leveled readers, The Day the Crayons Quit, The books with No Pictures, those kind of books. He also doesn't sit and read on his own--- he's just not that kind of kid to like curl up with a book.
I also have a 4 year old, so i try to find books that he's interested in, too (like the older one reads to him...). BUT, just wondering if i should be moving on or not....

Re: First Graders- what books are they reading?

I think 1st is still a bit early for the longer chapter books. DD is in 2nd and just starting to read those now and she still prefers the shorter books. And at her conference her teacher said she is reading at a 3rd grade level- so it's not that she is behind in that sense.
She also isn't a HUGE reading fan.
Like every now and then I will see her go and read on her own, but most of the time I have to say- why don't you do some reading?

You should be more concerned with what his reading level is and picking books from that level (and the next level up to challenge him a bit) then the type of book (chapter vs the leveled readers).
Ask his teacher what his reading level is currently and go from there.

My DS loved ready fredy, and magic treehouse books in first. I know for my kids this is when they started reading chapter books in first grade. But I would ask your DS teacher what his reading level is and get books at the level or 1 step above.

Have your kid read anything that interests him... doesn’t matter the length or format. Too long can be a turn off.

DS started magic tree house in k and is still reading it in second grade (books progress in level and are interesting). Otherwise, he loves non fiction... but every kid is different. Mine loves the science section.

It has been a long time, but I remembered reading the magic tree house books with DS when he was in 1st. Sometimes he read those by himself and sometimes we did it together.

I was going to recommend these. Both boys loved them - we'd read together.

Exactly what I was going to say. DS never seemed to care about reading on his own but liked for us to read to him. Then he found Magic Treehouse series when he was 7.5 and was excited about reading them all on his own. Since then, I try to find other series books that he really likes (he turned 8 in Oct) - Big Nate, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Geronimo Stillton, Minecraft stories, and for a while he was even reading Goosebumps (but got scared and stopped).

I think it's just important to find whatever the child is interested in and motivates them to read on their own.

My twins are in 1st. When I had my parent teacher conference she told me the levels of reading I should be looking for. I then ask at library for help.
One of my sons is on level L which is mid 2nd grade level. He likes Henry Mudge books. My other son is reading regular level books for 1st grade.

Henry and Mudge, Fly Guy (which is great for your four-year-old also), Magic Tree House. My son is in first and LOVES the Dog Man series (a lot of potty humor, which I'm not a fan of). I'm a librarian, and Elephant and Piggie are extremely popular with that age as well.

oh yeah! Elephant and Piggie! LOL thats what he comes home with every time they have library day Chat Icon they're great! he's also been reading some "Hey Jack" books (its a series from Usborne...) he really like those, too. So i just got him a couple more, and some "ready Freddy", too.

My first grader loves the Elephant and Piggie books. He has a lot and likes to get them at school on his library days.

i have two first graders who just turned 7 last month. my son loves pete the cat and fly guy. those are his favorites. He can't read like his twin sister can and gets reading assistance every day in school. So he needs to read easy books. My daughter loves the Fairy Ponies books from Usborne books. They are chapter books and she can't fully read them on her own so we will sit together and she will read a little and i will read what she can't. I read 90% of it though. The best thing to do it to ask his teacher what reading level he is on and find books based on his reading level.
