Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
I am a teacher and a mom. I have never made my kids do any work that’s been sent home over the summer. They read books occasionally. Summer is about taking a BREAK. I do not send home summer packets either. I send home a suggested reading list.
As long as your kids read over the summer, they’ll be fine. We spend the first few weeks reviewing anyway. Those of you with younger kids (elementary aged), take them places! Experiences and day trips are far more educational than worksheets and packets.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
I’m a teacher and a mom as well. Yes, my kids do work over the summer. They each have stuff assigned from school: read a couple of novels and do a math packet. Oldest one has a couple of science questions too. I’m also forcing her (yes, forcing...lol) to do work for her upcoming high school admissions test. They also practice piano, make their beds, and do the other things they’re expected to do during the school year. Exclusive of piano, this ALL would probably take like 20 minutes MAX out of their entire day if they spaced it out, but knowing some of them, they’ll be starting August 30th
Most people don’t get 10 week breaks from their jobs, I don’t see why my kids can’t do the bare minimum over that time period.

Do you do school work over the summer?
The way I look at it, over the school year my 7 year old is up at 6:30 and on the bus by 7:30. He has after school 2 days a week, swimming 1 night a week, and whichever sport he is currently playing 2x a week. Plus homework, and he has to be in bed by 8:30. Over the summer he sleeps in until sometimes as late as 9 if it's a week he doesn't have camp, goes to bed closer to 9:30, spends almost every afternoon after camp at the beach or pool, has playdates, we go on vacation. Even with doing 1 hour of work/reading a day, it is still a break from the grind of the school year.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
Yes and no.
School doesn’t assign anything.
July was our reading month. We discovered new series and my 6 & 7 year old went to the library at least once a week to read anything and everything.
We will take break to travel.
Then August try to get some spelling and handwriting in. That’s where our school missed the past year.

Do you do school work over the summer?
Yes. They were sent home a summer packet which they are working through. Not too much in it. Our daily stuff includes: reading on the raz kids app, xtra math app, piano practice, writing in their journal, 1st grade workbooks for my twin boys entering 1st in sept and 3grade workbook for my daughter. They go to camp, come home and eat lunch and do a few of the above and then we hit the pool, hang out or go somewhere. Weekends they have the entire weekend free.
ETA we go to a bunch of places during the week and weekends aquarium, zoo, museums and preserves etc.... and they’re attending a few field trips with their camp. I’m all for experiences which we do year round but the extra work we do is definitely a necessity imo.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
We read for at least 30 min every day and I buy workbooks in June and I make them do a few pages a week. It's less then an hour a day M-F and we still have plenty of time for all the summer fun, relaxing and weekly outings. It's one hour less a day they are glued to an iPad. I must be an evil mother. They also have daily chores and fold their own laundry. The horror.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
Yes my kids do homework every day. About half hour to 45 min a day, right after lunch they know they have to stay at the table and do their homework. The 5 year old does a few worksheets with basic math & writing/spelling practice & also reads a few level one reader books a day. The 3 year old does simple assignments.. putting the magnet letters in order, writing his name, recognizing numbers, drawing a picture.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
I try... it's a struggle, but if I don't have him do a sheet or something the start of the school year is a complete nightmare.

Do you do school work over the summer?
My son is going into first grade and has to do 4 book reports and math worksheets as summer homework! I am scared to know what the upper grades will be like.

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
No they sent home a reading challenge and I haven't even made her do that. She is not into reading and its not worth the fight. I have to fight with her during the school year.

Ugh my DD HATES reading! She is really a good reader too..above grade level...but man she has no desire to pick up a book for leisure. I have tried everything. Different series, at home reading challenge for a prize, nothing works. No way was I doing the optional summer reading challenge for school. Not worth the drama!

this my DD too ... She is a great reader and reads above her grade level but she just doesn't want to read to read. I suggest if she does it great if she doesn't then no. My DD seems to really like to read in school but my thinking is she likes to impress her teacher and get the praise
she begs me to order books from those book sheets and I do thinkig it will make her want to read but nope not while at home.
I am done def. Not worth the drama

Re: Do you do school work over the summer?
Yeah me too. I look at it as, not everyone loves to read as a hobby. Everyone is different with different interests. She loves art and would rather draw.

LOL! Maybe it's a thing with kids who love art- they hate to read!

Do you do school work over the summer?
They fight me on it, but I do. 4 days a week for about an hour. I got some cheesy homeschool books and I printed out some of my own fun stuff, but we do lots of STEM type things, or nature walks and iPad games like raz-kids for reading and ABC mouse. After we learn what's outside, I just make them write about it (what did the butterfly look like, why the tomatoes have striations, how do we know when it's going to rain etc) I try to make it as fun as possible, and as long as they're doing a little something, I'm fine with it. They're 5 and their attention span starts to wane after 30 minutes. They would honestly watch YouTube all day if it weren't for camp
