Week before XMas Activities

So my SIL wants to start doing an activity every day the week before Christmas....each family (there are 5 brothers and sisters) get a day and host something ie a craft or baking or a movie, etc.

I'm not sure if this is going to take off but I need some ideas. The kids range from 15 to 6 months....what is an activity that can include everyone? I thought about setting up some Minute to Win It type of scenarios, but some of the younger kids (2, 3) wouldnt be able to participate most likely....right?

HELP!

The week before Christmas? That sounds like a nightmare to be honest. Between working and trying to get all the last minute stuff done! Yikes!

I'd just host a movie night and call it a day- pick an Xmas Movie, make some popcorn, put out snacks.
Done.

I totally agree with you - while the idea of it is nice...the week before Christmas is always saddled with running around trying to do last minute things.

I have a feeling my other SIL is going to do movie night, but I could always do another one. UGHHHH

yeah weeknights are hard too. Kids are still in school that week, there is homework, dinner, showers, etc
I hate to say this but I'd be the bitchh who said- I pass on this, sorry!
LOL

I could see doing it the week AFTER Christmas- when the kids are all off, a lot of people are on vacation from work, and there is no more Christmas rush.

I love her ambition lol. That sounds like a lot though. A better idea would be for each set of parents to get a night to drop the kids off at each others houses and take that time to finish their last minute stuff.

If you're looking for an activity - making reindeer noodle soup is fun. Kids can help with adding the veggies and chicken.

Reindeer Noodle Soup

They also have pasta in other cute shapes. You can buy just the bag of pasta and make your own soup or cheese sauce for mac and cheese. The shapes are fun for the kids.

I actually LOVE that idea! I'd love for a full night to wrap in my living room instead of the crowded with crap spare bedroom upstairs. Or just to sit on my asss and eat christmas cookies and not have to share! Chat Icon

I'd probably do some sort of baking thing- maybe decorate cookies or bake cookies. I mean 15 months old there's not really much they can participate in but damn they'll try and it'll be cute. You can make the dough ahead of time and let them roll it out and pick out cookie cutters... throw some sprinkles on and you're good to go.

ETA: Or I'd get one or two of those gingerbread house kits and let the kids have at them.

ETAA: Oh I totally read it as a 15 month old! 2 and 3 year olds can totally bake and decorate cookies. They even have those icing bags that you can buy at Stop n Shop.

I actually just saw that in Hallmark movie, lol! Love the idea in theory, but really in reality sounds like a complete nightmare...one thing to do it with your own family that lives in the house, but to involve other people during the busiest week of the year sounds like chaos.
Some ideas, gingerbread houses, looking at neighborhood lights one night with hot chocolate, cookie baking, ornament making...those are some of the things they did in the Hallmark Movie!

I made salt dough ornaments with my 5 year old recently:

https://www.thebestideasforkids.com/salt-dough-ornament-recipe/

There is some down time while the ornaments are in the oven and then they need to cool before you paint them. We used acrylic paint but I would probably stick to tempura for the little kids! You can use food coloring to color them before they go in the oven if you want to keep the activity paint-free. You can use mod podge to seal everything.

Re: Week before XMas Activities

Every day the week before Christmas? That sounds like A LOT of commitment and A LOT of pressure. I can see maybe getting together one day but not every single night. Quality over quantity. Why not trade off one sibling hosting each year and every one brings an activity or game for the kids? Or do a family night the week after Christmas when the kids are off from school?

How about bringing the kids to church each week to celebrate advent?

EXACTLY!!!

I say this (not so) sarcastically but she is just SO CUTE in thinking that everyone is just lazing around trying to come up with 5 DAYS OF TRADITIONS the week of Christmas. She must be a SAHM (and this is JUST SARCASM BC I USED TO BE ONE LOL) because no one has that kind of time lolololol

She needs to make her own plans and and call it a day. Don't pawn traditions off on the overworked and overwrought family members. If anything, make the tradition to HELP THEM OUT Chat Icon

Re: Week before XMas Activities

I think it sounds nice. As someone above suggested I would do a cookie decorating or gingerbread house making. I recently ordered mini village kit from Michaels which has 4 tiny houses for kids to make at our house.

Not sure if has to be activity at your house but ice skating might be fun.

You could also just do a fun family game night.

If you all live close I think it sounds like a nice idea, but might be hard on the school nights. I would maybe try to do it Friday thru Christmas.

I kind of love this idea. In my mind, taking a Sunday ( maybe 2 weeks before Christmas) to bake cookies, decorate gingerbread houses, watch Elf with cousins would be so fun. Like a tiny christmas.

Yes, THAT could be great and sounds like a nice tradition.

Not every day of the week before Christmas on weeknights when there is work and school
