Re: Our first water bill is pretty high..
I live in Islip, and our meter is also near the road (I don't have curbs, so it's technically not near the curb... ) Our bill is also very low.

We just called SCWA. They said the meter has been running high since July which makes me wonder if there’s a leak associated with the sprinkler system. He said our meter is underground & inaccessible to us, Sigh! But they’re sending someone out on Tuesday to check the meter which also has a leak detector attached to it. If there’s a leak, they’ll have to come back and figure out where it is.
I would say our mistake in this is not requesting previous utility bills from the seller, then we would’ve seen the water bill was already unusually high & if there’s a leak, we could’ve had them fix it.
Fingers crossed this all doesn’t turn into a costly mess....
Did SCWA come today? How did it go?

Re: Our first water bill is pretty high..
I have no idea what is typical... My water meter is in the garage, my bill for every 3 months is about $150 for water/sewer which includes optional $12 a month for a protection plan in case there’s a problem on my property, we won’t be on the hook to pay for the repairs. I’m in NYC.

They did. There’s no leak. They said the usage has dropped dramatically so it must’ve been the sprinkler system. I don’t think we turned it off until the end of October. We never adjusted the timers before blowing it out (just not something we thought to do) so it’s possible they were set to go off WAY more frequently than they need to. SCWA said their last bill was $300 (Jul-Sep). We’ll have to make sure we set it properly in the spring. Annoying, but an easy fix!
