Dance recital ticket sticker shock
I danced for 13 years but this is my first year as a mom of a dancer. Tickets are$30 each. Dh thinks that's nuts. I said is typical.
Who is right?

I think it's typical nowadays. My daughter did dance last year and I believe the recital tickets were around $27 each and everyone above the age of 2 needed to have one. The studios have to rent the recital space from wherever they are getting it (school district, etc.) and I'm sure they are making a bit of a profit as well. For that amount of money, I hope that your studio does assigned seating. Ours sold tickets through an app where you could pick your seats from the uploaded seating chart, like you do with Ticketmaster. I'd be pissed to pay that amount and for it to be unassigned, first come, first serve.

That seems low compared to what I’ve heard people in my town pay.

Re: Dance recital ticket sticker shock
Welcome to the world of dance. Our studio is $35 a show. My girls were in 4 shows last year. We only buy tickets to 1 for ourselves and family and than I volunteer to help at the other shows so I don’t have to buy tickets to them all.

my cousin has three daughters and they are all dancers, in one form or another.
that number is super-duper crazy, in my book. but from what i hear, it's typical.
my cousin's girls dance in orange county, ca.

Re: Dance recital ticket sticker shock
Ours has been $27-$30 every year and I always complain to myself. I hate paying $60 for me and DH to watch my daughter in 1 dance at 2/3/4 years old! At 6 she’s still only in 1 number. I always said there should be cheaper pricing for the young kids in only one show. But I know that’s not realistic.

I haven’t gotten pricing yet for my dd recital but paying a little over $100 for a dress was crazy. I know they offer photos and was wondering how much they charge for that? Is it school pricing or more?

Our tix are $25 each i believe, plus fees. I end up volunteering so i don’t need one, but we purchase tickets for all the guests-we spend about $125/150 a year.
Pictures are comparable to school pic prices, unless you have a ton of costumes.

Our are $32 each! I think it's ridiculous.
And they get away with it because it's not like the parents/grandparents aren't going to go, ya know?

I think its crazy as well, but from what I am hearing and reading its the norm. I was even more shocked at the picture fees/costs, the costume cost, the dance wear cost etc. The dance world is too expensive for my liking and I am hoping that E's 'ehhh' attitude with it means she is not into it and we can move onto a less expensive hobby.

Re: Dance recital ticket sticker shock
As others have said, it's both typical AND nuts! I believe ours are $25, but they haven't released the prices yet for this year.
And I think it's really rude that they make ME pay for a ticket, considering I'm the one who sits there at the studio every week bored out of my mind. When you think of all the costs we incur so they can dance, you'd think they could afford to give at least one complementary ticket.
I refuse to ask my extended family to pay these prices to sit through a three hour show. Half of the dances are barely watchable unless your own child is in it!!!

agree... typical and nuts!! My sister spends a small fortune to get tickets for everyone. It's a few hundred dollars after you invite siblings, grandparents, etc.

Re: Dance recital ticket sticker shock
I think that is typical.
My DD goes to irish dance and her teacher (who is also the owner) does a buffet brunch for the recital at a knights of columbus and tickets are $55 each.... I feel bad asking family members to pay that much per ticket.

My dd took dance last year. Tix were $25 each, costume was $100. The CHEAPEST photo package was $80, which I thought was ridiculous, so I didnt buy any.

2 of my cousins have daughters who are competitive dancers and they're always away at a competition somewhere, including a clothing rack and cases of makeup and accessories, etc. But that's their thing with their kids..., they don't mind spending $$$$ because their chidlren love what they do, and this is their #1 activity. Hockey is expensive, too.
My DD's are both in non-competitive dance, and I hate it because of the costs. I don't have an income, and I really feel like they're forcing us to buy things we don't need, like a tee shirt to take one picture, expensive picture packages and the VIDEO of the performance, which is like a bootleg at best. No cameras or phones in the theatre at all. Last year, I bought only the group photo for $10 and no video, no tee shirt. I felt forced because everyone else was buying them.

Re: Dance recital ticket sticker shock
That’s typical. Dance is EXPENSIVE! My daughter dances competitively and between several costumes, team jackets, particular stage makeup, costume bags, comp entry fees, travel , recital tickets, shoes, pics and videos, plus just the monthly fee for all her classes, dance gets insane! So yeah, it’s typical for dance tickets. The studio has to pay for the space, the staff and still make money.

My daughters is 24.00 and I had no idea till I just logged on to see how much. I pay more each month so by the time recital comes the costumes and 4 tickets are all paid for and I don't have to pay extra at the time its due. The recital is also 40 minutes away since the high school it usually is in is having work done on it.

Two years ago I paid $25 each for 7 tickets just to have dd come down with a 102 fever. No refund was offered, her teacher (the owner) wanted me to just have her dance anyway. Thankfully she didn't want to continue the next year.
This year i have my 4yo doing dance at our town rec center for $45 for 8 week sessions. No costumes, no recitals and she loves it.
