I was reading the news just now and there are a whole bunch of new incidents - a woman who got sick on her honeymoon, an older couple who got E. coli - I would absolutely not go.

article

Ironic how the article says they hesitated before going. But they thought it wouldn't happen to them. Then it did.
Seems the food is bad their too. Doesn't sound like a place I would want to spend my vacation

Wow!! Crazy!!

That’s great. I’m sure you can take a wonderful, worry free vacation elsewhere. Sounds like they are having a serious problem with sanitation at the very least.

Re: Would you cancel a trip to Dominican Republic??

I went 2 years ago because my brother got married in Punta Cana and I would never ever ever go back. The day after his wedding, the night before we were going back home, I was feeling so sick and had gut wrenching stomach pains that I couldn't take it. I left dinner at some restaurant and had to use my brother's suite because I didn't think I could make it to my room. I was so sick, and had chills and fever. Somehow I made it to my room and I kid you not, I was afraid to sleep because I didn't think I'd wake up. My heart and head were feeling something crazy. The next morning wasn't any better and I thought I would miss my flight but I made it through because the thought of staying longer was worse. I felt sick for like 2 days. The weird thing is I don't drink and we all mostly ate the same food more or less. My 9 year old son was also with me as well as my boyfriend, parent's, cousins from other countries and other friends. The only other person to get sicker than me if possible was my dad's home attendant who was with us, and even though she lives here in NY, she's from the Dominican Republic and couldn't understand what happened to her. She actually missed her flight due to illness. I can't say if it was the water or food or what because like I said my son and boyfriend both stayed in the same room as me and we all ate in the same places, though not necessarily the same foods. This experience just frightened the crap out of me and this was before everything came out in the news. I don't even want to go to Mexico ever for fear of Montezuma's revenge!

So yea, I'd cancel lol

Re: Would you cancel a trip to Dominican Republic??

I didn't consider it safe before all the news stories and there's no way I would go now. No one thinks it will happen to them, most people believe that they are taking safety precautions, everyone thinks that they can avoid the danger, but this was probably what everyone who died believed too. Just not worth the risk IMO, especially when there are so many other places to go.

I agree and while bad "stuff" can happen to you anywhere, I don't hear of people dying left and right after drinking from a mini bar in NYC, Florida, California, Europe or other Caribbean Islands.
Something is very off

Crazy that's it's at The Hard Rock again!
Saw a story today about a family of 5 that got sick at the same time as the high school kids. Also stayed and ate at The Hard Rock. They want it closed down till they figure out what's going on at their resort.

To the OP. I can't imagine trying to relax. Glad you were able to cancel without losing too much money!

Re: Would you cancel a trip to Dominican Republic??

I wouldn’t go, but IF you go avoid drinking from the minibars or any product containing coconut milk since they don’t use pasteurized coconut milk there. Most people can’t tolerate it and they end up with cramping and the runs for a few days so avoid the pina coladas, rice made with coconut milk etc.

Re: Would you cancel a trip to Dominican Republic??

I would. But I also wouldn’t book a trip there in the first place because it’s NMS.

Interesting point that the previous poster made above me re: pasteurized milk. I’m used to non-pasteurized milk products, so my stomach is fine.

I think pasteurized milk and milk products are mostly used in the US. So far all of these deaths have happened to Americans. Plenty of people from other countries travel to DR. Nothing has been reported on that. So what is going on?

I see no reason to go to the DR. There are so many other destinations you can go to. Why take a chance? It's just not worth it, IMO, until they figure out what's going on.
