Grammar experts..

Quick question about how to word an invite :

What is the proper way of writing the following?

RSVP to Joe at: [email protected] or text to: (123) 555-5555

And if you have reasons, please add them!

Re: Grammar experts..

That’s a tough one and people tend to disagree on colon usage.

A colon should be used after a full sentence, which you have in both examples (in the imperative form).

But a colon should also be used to introduce a list or to introduce a point you want to stand out (‘i.e.’ for formal writing or ‘that is’).

Since you only have one item, I would omit the colon in both places. But my answer is based on the fact that I don’t really understand your exact question. Therefore, I’ve answered the colon part because the colon is used incorrectly. Be a bit more specific please.

ETA:

Or are you looking for comma usage within the whole sentence? If you take away the colons and you want to use both phrases, then you need a comma before ‘or.’

My mother wants to send out the the information as I wrote it, but it looks “off.”

I thought of removing both colons as well, but I’ve also never been partial to using them.

RSVP to [email protected] or text 123-555-5555

This avoids unnecessary punctuation and redundancies. But I’d also add an RSVP deadline after the phone number.

Re: Grammar experts..

By omitting the word “at”, you won’t need colons. It is implied that one would RSVP in these two ways, so there’s no need to explain further. I hope it helps!
